I really enjoyed the message of this book, and I know we will be reading it for years to come. My 11 month old daughter is really drawn to stories that have rhythm and rhyme to the words, and this one has both. When we first read the story, I was questioning a bit the choice of the illustrator to make the bear cubs 3 different types of bears. A bear family with a brown, white, and panda bear cub isn't exactly something you would witness in nature. But then I realized that perhaps that was a conscious decision to connect with children who may be a part of a racially diverse family because of adoption or foster care. This book would make a wonderful gift for a family who may fall into that category with 'bear cubs' who look different on the outside, but who all need the same unconditional love.
Also "God loves you even when you both are quite the sticky mess". 1 of the little bears smears honey on one of the other bears. That is a good lesson on the love of God and of your parents. Just because we ground you or discipline you for doing wrong does not mean that we don't love you!
I received this book in exchange for my honest review
The message is well conveyed, sweet and simple. The 3 cubs are comfortable with each other in their chosen family but now, they want to see how much their adoptive parents love them despite being themselves. It does have a slight religious overtone but I didn't really notice or mind it. So, it should be okay for all. However, if it does bother you, just to forewarn you. The writing is simple and has a nice rhythm. Some words might need defining for the younger set, but nothing overly difficult to comprehend. And the bears - SO CUTE! The artwork is so adorable and beautifully drawn. Every time I turned the page, I can't help but smile at the all the cuteness. With just simple pictures, the artist matched the emotion and action to the writing.
The price is just right for the length and quality of the board book. The pages are thick and the colors/printing are sharp and clean. I would highly recommend this book. Beautiful message, lovely artwork and good price makes this a winner for my shelf.
This is the type of board book with the padded front. It also begins the story on the end pages, which I do not like. Since the story is different things that happened the story could easily have been shortened in order to have real end pages.
Also I suppose we need to read They are Loved the Same in order to know why two brown bears have a brown bear cub, a panda cub, and a polar bear cub. I found that distracting.
Board books are typically for babies and toddlers. These are emergent readers. Readers in the emergent stage of reading need one line of text per page with a matching illustration. This book has several sentences and the illustrations while cute only slightly match the text.
This is a good message for children to hear. A good book for parents to read, but I am not sure why it is a board book.
