“I See You” begins as a cross between a standard police thriller and a dysfunctional family drama. Someone is abducting young boys in a small town, and the crimes are very similar to a similar string of killings a decade earlier. That would seemingly be enough of a problem for the detective in charge, Greg Harper (Jon Tenney), to deal with, but he’s also got big problems at home. His wife (Helen Hunt) recently had an affair, and their marriage is now in limbo, with him sleeping on the couch. Also, their teenage son (Judah Lewis) blames Hunt for the entire mess and won’t speak to her.
And, if all that isn’t bad enough for the family, strange things are going on in their home. A repairman reports that a young girl let him in to fix a window one day, even though no girl lives there; the family silverware mysteriously vanishes, and Tenney gets locked in a closet. Hunt suspects that her son is responsible for these pranks, but the pranks get increasingly violent, and the family may be in real danger.
To reveal more of the story would really spoil it for many viewers, so all I will say is that the filmmakers abruptly switch perspective about 40 minutes into “I See You.” The next 40 minutes is pretty much a replay of the first 40, except that the camera pulls back enough to reveal what some members of the Harper family were unaware of earlier. Some questions still remain, so there is another big reveal with about 30 minutes left in the film. I have to say that, as familiar as I am with all the tricks that suspense filmmakers throw out to surprise viewers, I had no idea when the reveals started what the eventual outcome would be.
“I See You” is highly plot-driven, as opposed to character-driven, and the early parts of the movie are a bit of a slow go at first. The Harper family is pretty much like any dysfunctional family with a troubled, moody teenager. Although Helen Hunt and Jon Tenney give soli performances, they pretty much disappear from the middle section of the movie, which improves while they are in the background. Further, the abduction of the young boys is treated pretty as a diversion for much of the movie. The police devote surprisingly little manpower to the case (pretty much just Tenney and his partner).
But, although “I See You” is a gimmick film, it’s a heck of a good gimmick. The plot is preposterous from a credibility standpoint, but, as the second half unfolds, viewers see just how carefully the director set up most of the bits of business. Further, even though the family drama isn’t the world’s greatest, director Randall manages to generate a good bit of suspense without resorting to jump-cut scares. Later, the finale provides plenty of action as well.
“I See You” isn’t at the level of twisty thrillers like “The Usual Suspects” or “The Sixth Sense,” but for a low-budget direct-to-video effort, it’s an entertaining and often suspenseful story. Screenwriter Devon Graye has come up with a tricky plot that would make a lot of far more experienced writers jealous. In the world of direct-to-video movies, where suspense scripts are far too often a total insult to the viewers’ intelligence, “I See You” will keep them guessing. It’s really nothing more than a puzzle movie, but it’s definitely one worth seeing for fans of the genre.

OK. Not going to lie, I am definitely quite impressed!
The more I thought about this film after I watched it, the more the tiny little-nuances of the plot made sense even in the minutiae and details, which is saying something because this is a real jigsaw puzzle of a story at least certainly in its presentation. While it's no Memento or Inception, this is a REALLY GOOD "who dunnit?" flick with an element of psychological-thrill that's extremely enjoyable, particularly if you like thinking films or films that make you question and try to figure out the puzzle and put it together.
While it may feel at times it belongs to the "horror" genre, take my word that it doesn't (I actually don't like "horror" flicks myself). This is definitely thriller, suspense, drama, murder-mystery film.I do think the writers and directors did a great job in this story and its crafting. The way the story is told they give you enough info to entice you to formulate your own theories but not to ever confirm, even till the end because there are continual twists&turns throughout even till the end. I must remark, it is one thing when a movie goes for a twist/turn just for the effect, or tries it but it feels forced. This movie is NOT THAT. The twists genuinely make sense, don't feel forced, and are brilliant in their effect (in my estimation).
So, I was extremely pleasantly surprised with this film. It proved way more compelling, thought-provoking, interesting, and exciting than I would've imagined for any random flick that I'd find on Amazon Prime.
Bravo to the writers of this on a excellent mystery-story that teases us and strings us along the whole ride! Wow. Been awhile since I had a nice experience like this with a film. Thoroughly engaging and satisfying in equal parts. A great ride.
Well done, Well done. Very highly/strongly recommended!
