The most wonderful TV series I've seen in years

Gentleman Jack is a biography of Anne Lister (1791-1840), the owner of Shibden Hall in Yorkshire. Lister was a lesbian before there was any social recognition or understanding of female same-sex attraction. The primary story line deals with Lister's loves, disappointments and heartbreaks, and how she eventually falls in love with Ann Walker, an heiress at a neighboring estate. Lister manages to hold her head high as a strong, capable woman in a male dominated society. THE PERFORMANCES BY SURANNE JONES AND SOPHIE RUNDLE ARE BRILLIANT FROM START TO FINISH. The show already has an enormous fan following with several Facebook fan pages. A second season in currently in production. The program was aired on HBO in the US, but I wanted to own my own copy so I can watch it again and again.

Spectacular period drama about an utterly uncommon woman
Verified purchase
The entire cast does a phenomenal job making me believe they feel the pressures and restrictions of their roles in society.

This is unquestionably the story of an openly lesbian woman in a time when even heterosexual sex was strictly socially regulated, and I was pleased to see that they unflinchingly depict the womens' sex lives instead of copping out with fade-to-blacks and allusions.

Suranne Jones is an absolute powerhouse, Anne's struggles with wanting to live freely and her frustration at her various lovers' cowardice and complacency are so realistically and subtly portrayed by her that I many times found myself damn near viscerally angry on her character's behalf.

The costuming is gorgeous, the camerawork is great, the storytelling is compelling even as a person who largely doesn't care for or about romance, the entire cast does a phenomenal job and I cannot recommend this series enough.

Grateful.

I am extremely grateful to Gentleman Jack's creators for letting the world know about Anne Lister. I am always looking to learn about more lesbians in history and what they did to survive, and in Anne's case not just survive but thrive, in an age where homosexual relationships were not accepted and in most cases were punishable.

Loving Anne already
I read a preview article of this on Monday and was very excited. Period dramas are hit or miss with me, but after thoroughly enjoying The Crown with Claire Foy, I felt up for trying another one that centered around a woman with power in a very masculine time.
Already I appreciate the complexity this show presents with Anne, she's no saint by today's standards but that is understandable considering the society she existed within and the tough public face needed to be a successful land owner then.
Lastly, I know history shows us that queer people are not a modern phenomenon but it's hard to believe that in your bones without stories to back it up. Seeing Anne be revered for her tenacity by the society around her, if not quite fully respected, and then seeing her completely vulnerable when it comes to her heart feels so very real and relatable.
I can't wait for more episodes and trust that the complex, quality storytelling will continue!

Very well done

Great series inspired by the very unique Ann Lister’s life story. I’m reading her diaries and the series are very romanticized compared to her real life, but it’s great to have series on her as 10 years ago it would never have happened.

Fun Series

This is a fun series. The protagonist is flawed and selfish but that's part of what makes the story compelling.
