Editorial Reviews

Swervedriver are back with their first new album in 18 years! I Wasn't Born to Lose You is the classic Swervedriver sound - the liquid distortion of shoegaze combined with the swagger of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. It was recorded at legendary studios Konk in London and Birdland in Melbourne. The band begins a 22 date U.S. tour in March, including their debut SXSW appearance.

    ------------------------------
    Upfront advice:

Anyone who is fond of 90s shoegaze and today's nu-gaze will almost certainly find a lot to love in this album. Swervedriver is still the consummate shoegaze band, and their sound is just as great today as it was 17 years ago.

    ------------------------------
    Detailed musical musings:

In the late 80s and early to mid 90s, the American popular music scene had pretty much been subdivided into a few key genres. Grunge and hip-hop ruled the day, along with a wildly oscillating American "alternative" style that had seemingly dozens of few-hit bands orbiting around stalwarts like REM, NIN, and RHCP. More conventional Top 40 pop was, as always, the other big part of the balance. On the less popular front, EDM and house were gaining momentum outside of dance clubs, abetted by occasional high visibility acts like Dee Lite and crossover work by Madonna. Electro-lounge and chill were taking off because young adults were discovering Ibiza. The UK had a bit of a second invasion with Britpop and electronica-influenced indie acts such as Oasis, Blur, Garbage (partly UK), and Radiohead. Glam metal was on the rocks, and sliding into the water, though alternative metal styles were being held afloat by the likes of Metallica, Anthrax, and RATM. Crossover country was on the rise. It was a time of real musical flux.

In the midst of all this was shoegaze, aka "The Scene that Celebrates Itself". It was a hard genre to define, because it encompassed a lot of different musical influences. Irish and British in origin, it wrapped up sounds from rock, dream-pop, Madchester, and psychedelic in a glorious wall-of-sound style. Big, lush arrangements of multiple guitars, pedal and amp effects, electronics, and haunting vocals drove the sound that was behind thoughtful, often poetical lyrics. The sound could range from blistering to dreamy and even ambient, and often in the same song. If you were between 15 and 30 at this time, and had any interest in indie music, shoegaze was on your radar. For me, it displaced grunge handily as the defining music of the time.

The whole scene was dominated by a few main players: My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Lush, Chapterhouse, Slowdive, Catherine Wheel, and Swervedriver. I have many of the albums from the total discography of these bands. For some, I have all their work. I can't think of a bad or even mediocre one among the bunch. By the late 90's, all these groups had either disbanded or gone quiet. A few years later, the sound became revitalized, mostly by new acts twenty years younger than the original players, who payed homage to the pioneers with so-called nu-gaze. Opting more for the dreamier side of shoegaze, nu-gaze (at least what I've heard of it) seems to avoid the harder edge that many of the original shoegazers could artfully weave with their etherial sounds.

Now after a 17 year absence, a real shoegaze pioneer returns to recording. Swervedriver's "I Wasn't Born to Lose You" is the real deal, every bit as authentic as anything published in the 90s. This is not an adapted, or evolved sound. It's Swervedriver, as pure as it gets. The songs are artfully constructed, and meticulously played, just as they were in 1995. For those of us who lived that time, and loved this music then, it's excellent nostalgia. For those of you new to the genre, I hope you will see how unique and thoughtful this music is, especially taken alongside the extremely monotonous fare that has become popular music. This is especially true if you are a devotee of modern nu-gaze and lo-fi -- this album gives you a chance to hear where your favorite acts got their inspiration.

Listen to the samples (try Eye Tunes for longer cuts) to see just how good uncompromised indie music can be. And if you are a newcomer to this sound, and it strikes you well, give a listen to the other original shoegaze pioneers I mentioned above.

Ah wow where to even begin with these guys? I first discovered Swervedriver right after Raise was released. I was in a small independent record store in College Station, TX when this was playing over the store speakers. Immediately bought the CD and was hooked right there. I purchased all their albums during the 90s as each was released including a few singles. I still have all of it in my personal collection. My Mezcal Head has definitely seen better days but the CD still plays and its rough appearance only adds to its character. This band has traveled with me all these years.

I thought they pretty much wrapped it up save for the most excellent Juggernaut best of CD from a few years back. But then the other day I was just goofing around online and saw some video thumbnails with this album's cover and I was like, What? Wait. Swervedriver released new material in 2015? So I picked up this vinyl (my first Swervedriver vinyl by the way). And I can't even describe how great it is to hear some new Swervedriver after all these years.

This album is excellent. The opening track "Autodidact" is fantastic from start to finish. "For a Day Like Tomorrow" is another highlight, particularly the second half of the song which even got my teenage daughter to take out her headphones and give a listen. "Deep Wound" is another great one. "I Wonder?" is good ol' dirty Swervedriver. The closing track "Days" is made in such a way that when it's over, you're kinda sad because you want more. But alas, the record needle gives that all too familiar scratch sound that, yes, the record is over.

I'm sure with each repeated listen of this album I'll find more that I love per usual with all of their material. One of the aspects I love most about Swervedriver is how they can take obscure melodies and bring them in and out of clarity. Very talented artists.

So with the vinyl release, I'm not sure this album's length necessarily warrants a double vinyl pressing and it would have been nice had the release come with maybe a cool gatefold concept. But whatever. I'm here for the music. And the double vinyl action just makes you work for it you know?

I've maintained all these years that Swervedriver is still one of the best bands that no one has heard of. And I'm glad to see so many other enthusiastic Swervedriver fans here in the reviews. This just proves to me that these guys were way ahead of their time back in the beginning. Anyway, thanks for reading my review and hope you enjoy this album as much as I am.

On their upcoming fifth studio release, British Alternative band Swervedriver produced a well-crafted collection of charming songs that pick up right where we last heard the band, almost 17 years ago. I Wasn’t Born To Lose You, the first studio album of new material since 1998s 99th Dream, sounds slightly derivative (in a positive way) of their contemporaries Sonic Youth, Catherine Wheel and My Bloody Valentine. However, their updated sound and production is pleasing to the ear and feels as though the band had been recording regularly since 1998. The whirling and dreamy guitar playing is simplistic, yet enticing. It’s a mellow vibe throughout the album, shimmering with Shoegaze with enough backbone behind it to not fall into the overly-cliched genre. If you enjoy catchy hooks, melodies, shimmery guitar tones—song after song, then you’re sure to adore this new album.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2015
With the surprise release of the Deep Wound single in Dec '13 it was clear that Swervedriver still had that early 90's vibe nailed, and this album continues that magical return to a time when guitars shimmered and roared, feedback and wahwah swooped and sored, and we all had hair. It's amazing that this is the first album released since '98 and it really is as good as anything from the Raise & Mezcal Head period, and stands strong in it's on right. Whereas some of the later material started to explore more straightforward structures and styles, I Wasn't Born To Lose you mines that reach seam of heavy shoegazey guitar magic that made them such an important band last time around.
With Ride touring and Swervedriver relaeasing new material and touring also, it's a great time to be an old indie kid.
