It's good to have choices

Since Lenovo no longer includes options for which type of trackpoint cap you get this package is very helpful if you don't find the (appearant current default) "Soft Dome" cap to your liking. This pack contains one of each of three styles, the "classic dome" (small textured dome, relatively hard, the classic trackpoint cap), the "soft dome" (softer, with a wider top (mushroom shaped) and studded to provide traction, the current default style on newer Lenovo products) and the "soft rim" cap (similar to the 'soft dome' cap but a smooth top with a thick raised edge).

I find that while the soft dome and soft rim caps a quick and comfortable they don't offer the precision of the classic dome and, due to their overhanging shape, sometimes interfere with my typing (my fingers will catch the edge of the cap instead of striking the keys immediately surrounding it). Also useful if your current cap is accumulating dirt or has been worn down.

Installation is exceedingly simple, just pull the current cap upwards until it pops off and then press the new one on (just turn it so that the square shaped cutout in the base is roughly oriented to match the stud that it is supposed to fit on).

These are bootlegs, not original IBM TrackPoints

You would THINK that when you buy something labeled with the part number and brand name of what you want, say, "IBM 73P2698 Trackpoint Cap Collection," you'd get what you're expecting. Apparently the seller I chose, amznpmts, disagrees.

These are cheaper-plastic knockoffs that look terrible. There is no Lenovo or IBM branding on the packaging and no "I" stamp on the bottom. The Soft Dome and Soft Rim trackpoints are covered in black spots, (grease or black plastic from manufacturing?) which won't wash off, and this is on the bottom AND top of the trackpoint.

I have a legit Soft Dome to compare to, and the real deal is much softer and works better. These are very stiff plastic and are a completely different color red than real TrackPoints. Since they're stiffer, they don't work as well, unless you want extra stiffness. If you're worried about ergonomics enough to use a Soft Rim, you probably don't!

The knockoff Classic Domes do not have black spots though, and the official Classic Domes are SUPPOSED to be quite stiff, so there's almost no difference. Oh yeah, except for the fact that the square hole in the bottom of the TrackPoint is NOT CENTERED on one of them. It rubs against one letter, yet has plenty of room on the other.

I'm not happy with having only one TrackPoint out of 6 usable so I'll probably be returning these and buying the real things from the Lenovo site.

Either Lenovo has changed the spec, or these are cheap imitations. While identical physically (so they fit the laptop), they are made of a material that is not as tacky to the touch so fingers slip off easily.

new cap feels great

It's amazing how much nicer it feels to work on my Thinkpad now that I have a new trackpoint cap installed. The old one had become worn-down and slippery. New one is much grippier, making it easier to control the mouse. This package contains three different styles of cap, each of which has its own feel to try out.
