Editorial Reviews

Belinda Carlisle pursued a solo career after leaving the Go-Go's in 1984. As her solo career progressed, Carlisle removed any of the rough edges remaining in her style, transforming from a new wave rocker to a polished adult contemporary pop singer. The change was evident on her first album, 1986's Belinda. Featuring the number three hit single Mad About You, the record went gold and established her as a viable hit-maker. The following year, Carlisle released Heaven on Earth, her greatest solo success. Continuing the immaculately produced mainstream pop of Belinda, the record featured the number one title track, the number two single I Get Weak, and the Top Ten ballad Circle in the Sand. Runaway Horses, released in 1989, was another successful album, spawning the hit singles Leave a Light On and Summer Rain. Subsequent album releases included 1991's Live Your Life Be Free and Real, released in 1993. A year later, Carlisle joined the re-formed Go-Go's for a short-lived reunion, even though it was widely praised. Carlisle returned to solo recording in 1996 with A Woman and a Man. A myriad of collections and compilations followed, as well as another Go-Go's reunion. Carlisle released a new solo album, Voila, in 2007.

This special ICON collection features an exciting Brand new recording Sun!

Belinda Carlisle's latest hits collection "Icon" has all the great ones, but is even more significant because of the new pop-dance single "Sun", her last being "All God's Children", "A prayer for everyone" and "Feels like I've known you forever" from her 1999 "A Place on Earth: The Greatest Hits" collection.

She never was particularly interested in doing another pop album "I've been there, done that." she said.
Many times in fact! Four studio albums with the Go-Go's and seven solo albums, She had many hits in the US but even more so worldwide.
She's returned to the US after 20 years in living in France (her last album was in 2006, the magnificent and sexy "Voila" sung entirely in French.)She's also lived part time in India, creating beautiful Indian inspired home-accessory line for Bergdorf Goodman, profits went to charities.) So, she stays busy!

We all hope that "Sun" will be her comeback hit and will entice her to record more. It's a high-energy club/dance song that many die-hard fans have waited to hear from her for years. Her son, James Duke Mason introduced it to her and she loved it, so this could be the new "heaven is a place on earth" for a new generation and hopefully another new beginning in her singing career. Times and tastes in music has changed over the years, but everyone still loves the Go-Go's (they continue to sell-out on summer tours) and Belinda is still a huge hit in Europe, but it's time she regains and hopefully RECONQUERS the new and old fan base here in the US and still prove that she can still belt out emotional, fun and relevant songs!

Belinda Carlisle's Icon: Best Of is a compilation of some of her biggest hits but the shining moment for fans across the world is the fact it includes her first brand new pop recording titled "Sun". Belinda has not recorded new pop music since 2000's A Place On Earth: Greatest Hits Collection.

Sun kicks off this set off and fans eagerly awaited it to be everything we expect from Belinda and she delivers! Sun is upbeat and extremely radio friendly. Soon as it ends you wanna play it again. It's pop/rock/dance rolled into one yet also very 2013. Belinda has a knack for choosing songs that suit her unique sunkissed voice. Sun has softer verses sung fast then it drives into an uptempo sing-a-long chorus. This is as strong as any lead single from her solo albums.

The rest of the album contains smash hits that we all know from the powerful Summer Rain (still one of Belinda's personal favorites), Leave A Light On, Live Your Life Be Free, Mad About You and of course her worldwide #1 Heaven Is A Place On Earth. An album cut from 1989's Runaway Horses album is in the mix with Shades Of Michaelangelo which remains a stellar ballad that lets her voice glide. A highlight is the 1991 single Do You Feel Like I Feel which has always been a classic for me. The UK #6 smash (We Want) The Same Thing is included and it's the actual album version from Runaway Horses not the Single Remix which makes for a nice inclusion. Nice sound and remastering.

It's great to hear a new Belinda Carlisle single and Sun is everything and more. A great return to her pop music roots and this single will stay highly regarded for years to come. Let us all hope Sun and fans reactions worldwide inspire Belinda Carlisle to once again make a pop record. Grab this Icon CD and enjoy Sun along with some of Belinda's biggest smash hits.

AWESOME!!! is the only way to describe the new single from Belinda. She takes this song on a journey, and it radiates!!!
A must have, if only for this one song. Fits perfectly with the other classics of hers. This is a WINNER!!!!

I am so thrilled Belinda has recorded a new song ("Sun"), and it's included exclusively in this collection. This gives me hope that there might be more new releases from her not too far down the road. The next ten tracks are her biggest hits released between 1986 and 1991. Most are full-length album versions, which is also a nice change from standard "hits" packages. A couple edits are included for "Summer Rain", and "Do You Feel Like I Feel?", but the full length album versions of "Leave a Light On", "Live Your Life Be Free" and "I Get Weak" are chosen here. The single mixes of "Heaven is a Place On Earth" and "Circle in the Sand" are used, which I actually prefer to the original album versions. This collection also includes the Belinda-penned ballad "Shades of Michelangelo", which in my opinion is one of her best songs ever recorded. The only slight complaint would be the exclusion of "Runaway Horses", which is one of the strongest tracks from the album of the same title, but that's only a minor complaint, as many other great songs are included. Thank you Geffen for releasing a stellar collection, and thank you Belinda for creating such beautiful music over the years!

It's nice to see on one of these "ICON" records that a new song is added, and the song "Sun" is no throw away. It's actually a new recording for Belinda and co-written by the great Gabe Lopez. This is pure danceable pop with a heavy bass line. And it makes for a nice kick-off to many of Belinda's best songs. See if you can listen without moving your feet, or some part of your body.
