Editorial Reviews

The late Bill Monroe was given the title of The Father of Bluegrass uncontested. A native son of the blue grass state, Kentucky, Monroe and his merry band of revolving members of the Blue Grass Boys (which at one time included the legendary duo of Flatt and Scruggs) created what has now become the foundation of American roots music: the blending of guitar, banjo, fiddle, upright string bass and the mandolin. Monroe himself was a stellar mandolin player whose group dabbled in the popular music of the day, which at the start of their recording cycle was the 1930s, along with an occasional hymn and instrumental where, on the latter, they could showcase their pickin' skills.
Monroe maintained his straightforward direction in music and gained considerable accolades along the way, with much of that recognition and notoriety arriving during his almost half-century recording career with Decca the label from which these performances are taken. Some of the many honors bestowed upon him are listed below.

Having often shared the stage with the late, great Hank Williams Sr., and establishing a unique style of music that saw its first revival during the folk era of the '70s, there s no doubt that Bill Monroe, who died just shy of his 85th birthday in 1996, is a true Icon.
