Can't beat the price!

This is great for HDTV but if you want to have some fun on the cheap then SDR is AWESOME and this dongle is perfect for the beginner hobbyist. If you are just starting out with the hobby I would suggest putting the dongle in an Altoids tin and plugging it directly in to your desktop/laptop, this will GREATLY reduce any unwanted RF from being seen on your waterfall.I modded mine to plug directly into RG6 cable which is very good cable and cheap, so I can monitor ADS-B. RG6 is designed to be used for frequencies up to 1GHZ and has a velocity factor of 86, which is pretty good. The antenna that comes with the dongle is good for picking up HDTV but for SDR I would go ahead and get a Discone antenna:

If you live in a highly populated area I would be careful turning up the gain as high powered FM stations broadcasting closeby could burn out your dongle with the Discone connected.

Cheap, but a lot of fun!

I purchased 2 of these. One of them simply works great. The second one has a hard time staying connected to the antenna. You have to wiggle it sometimes to make a good contact. I wish they had standard TV type F style connectors.

Update: I had a bad MCX antenna adapter. Once I replaced it, the antenna loosing connection problem went away.

This worked well for my Raspberry Pi project.
I tested it first on a Windows 7 machine and it picked up local radio stations. After verifying it did what it was supposed to. I set out to getting it working with a raspberry pi to receive ADS-B so I could know what aircraft were flying over. The other test project was to turn it into a Ham Radio scanner available over TCP/IP so I could listen to various ham channels while at work.
It worked as advertised.

I use my unit plugged into a Raspberry Pi 2 connected to FlightRadar for data sharing. The first SDR stick I purchased seemed very similar to this, but was faulty and didn't work on Windows 10, 7 or the Raspberry Pi. But I was very pleasantly surprised to see that this unit has never failed me and worked on all of the aforementioned platforms. I have had my SDR for the past 6 months now and have never had it stop working.

The size of the antennae is probably the weakest part of the device but is to be expected for this price, and detects ADS-B aircraft from a fairly decent range when positioned beside a window.

Neat techno toy. I was unable to get more than AM, FM, and some local emergency broadcast reception - but what do you expect from that little antenna? If you are into DX'ing, you'll need a serious antenna upgrade. Throw away that remote. It's useless for what I use it for.

I have had to work very hard to get this thing to work on anything except my android phone.... go figure. The antena is a joke, and no ground plane is going to make it better, just need to sell the stick with properly working drivers. The DVB-T function does not work in the united states as far as I can tell and you can not tune in to OTA stations with any software I have found, because there are none that support the driver.

After spending a lot of long hours stubornly refuzing to quit, I finally got SDR# to work, but its useless unless you are looking for an exact frequency. There are no scanning features.

Definitely would not buy again.

I have had a great deal of entertainment from this little device. I use mine on both a Mac and android tablet with awesome results. Was impressed with how well the little antenna picks up but add an adaptor to hook up an outside antenna and you will be very pleased. I listen to aircraft from Louisville, Lexington and Nashville airports as well as local police and EMS. Some software is better than others but so far my favorite on my Mac is CubicSDR.
