I say this with a little attitude, being a life long audiophile. I let it set in a drawer for five months and thought I'd put it in one of our many yard sales, then thought I'd better at least hook it up and make sure it worked before unloading it on someone less enlightened about quality sound.
So I plugged it into an ipod and listened......Huh????? This isn't terrible!!!! In fact it sounds pretty good! I tried a couple more tracks and listened more. Alrighty then! Let me just pull down my old spectrum analyser from the closet and see what I'm hearing. As it turns out the frequency response is fairly smooth down to 200 hertz closely miked. I listened to this monaural midget on and off for a while and thought, "to bad it's not stereo". Turns out ihome does make a few similar models for stereo, but at a higher price. So here's what I did gang! I looked through my trusty Amazon site and found a really great 3.5mm audio splitter from "Cable Matters" for a very reasonable $7.99. I bought that dandy 5 star splitter along with yet another iM59WC speaker. I know what you're thinking! That audiophile isn't as smart as he thinks! The iHome iM59WC is a monaural speaker. Yep that's true, it is in fact a monaural speaker, and having two speakers isn't going to change that fact. So here's what I did. The Cable Matters splitter has these really nice metal sleeves on the output side of it. I started with one sleeve, unscrewing it and carefully cut away at the insulation. There you'll find a braided shield wire along with a red wire and a white wire. Cut the red wire and put the sleeve back on. This will be the left channel. Go to the remaining output connection and once again reveal the wiring. This time, cut the white wire and return the sleeving. This will be the right channel. Connect both speakers using the newly made cables and you're set to hear these neat little speakers in stereo.
Yes, I gave this speaker five stars. Accept the fact that you can't compare it to audiophile grade anything. Aesthetically these little gems make listening to music very convenient, and they're smooth enough to fulfil your need to be entertained.
I purchased this for my wife to use with her computer and phone. She likes it. It's small, portable, and has a good battery life. It's deep enough at low volues to be an improvement over built-in computer iMac speakers, much better than a phone, but worse (narrower range) than my portable speaker. The downside is my speaker is larger and takes 4 AAA batteries.
Having a built-in battery is convenient though. I wanted to really like this too - I brought it to a picnic to test. It couldn't produce sounds at the highest volumes without distorting - yet needed to be set high in an outdoor setting as soft background music.
It's more than adequate for indoor use or the shower though. Had I intended it to be for this, I would have bought the bluetooth version. I find cords a hassle. Overall though, it's worth a solid 4 stars - it's what's advertised, it's a self contained speaker, and it provides decent sound if only comparing to speakers with comparable sizes.
