The popular Ikigai Venn diagram doesn’t represent the meaning of Ikigai; it symbolizes Ikigai business more. Want to know why? Keep reading.
Ikigai business is a business that is meaningful to you, making society happy, and profitable all at the same time. It is based on the philosophy of Omi-merchants, who were considered to be the most successful merchants in Japan from the medieval period to the 18th century.
The philosophy is called Sanpo-Yoshi, which consists of three Yoshis
Urite-Yoshi: the seller is happy
Kaite-Yoshi: the buyer is happy
Seken-Yoshi: society is happy
It is a business of three-way satisfaction; nobody loses.
To find an Ikigai business, the four statements in the Ikigai Venn diagram;
What you like,
What you are good at,
What’s the world needs,
What you can be paid for,
can be useful.
However, the Japanese word Ikigai has nothing to do with this concept.
Ikigai has two meanings.
1. daily joys or pleasures that motivate you to live
2. life purposes or reasons for living
A hobby can be your Ikigai, family or friends can be your Ikigai, work can be your Ikigai, and a spiritual quest can be your Ikigai. You don’t have to be good at it, you don’t have to be paid for it, and it doesn’t have to be something the world needs.
The Venn diagram is not Ikigai.
Nonetheless, if you are interested in the concept of the Venn diagram and how to combine your Ikigai and business, this book will benefit you.
In this book, you will discover:
•The business model of Omi-merchants.
•How to find a business of three-way satisfaction
•How to turn your art into a business
•How to make a living doing what you like
•How to think like a merchant
•How to keep the balance of what you like and what you are good at.
•The true meaning of Ikigai and how it can help you lead a prosperous life.
It is part of Zen and a Way of Sustainable Prosperity, focusing on the Sanpo-Yoshi business. If you have time to read the longer version, please read Zen and a Way of Sustainable Prosperity, but if you would like a quick read, this is short and concise.

About the author

Sachiaki Takamiya is the founder of the Ikigai Diet and Ikigai Bio-Hacking. He developed these two health methods based on centenarians in Japanese blue zones and Shizenha people, Japanese naturalists who live in the countryside leading organic lifestyles. He won the outstanding performance award of the Next Publishing Award in March 2022 with the book, The Ikigai Diet.
In his early 20s, he lived in England, where he studied Shiatsu and macrobiotics at the British School of Shiatsu, studied different kinds of psychotherapies at the Center for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education, and at the School of Hypnosis and Advanced Psychotherapy.
After returning to Japan, he gave workshops on holistic transformation based on his studies of both physical and psychological approaches.
He now lives in a small rural town called Hino town in Shiga Prefecture, one of Japan's longest-lived prefectures. He practices a Satoyama lifestyle there, growing vegetables and making fermented foods. Although he is 60 years old, he has had no problems at medical check-ups so far, and he was diagnosed that his vascular age was 21 years younger.
