1. Take your car to a mechanical
2. Try to fix the problem yourself
If you belong to the first category, why are you reading this?
If you belong to the second group, and you have a basic knowledge on car repair, read on.
All the new cars now have many sensors, it is basically impossible to fix your own car unless you have a OBD2 code reader. The reader will tell you what the problem is, but it will not tell you how to fix it.
The Equus 3030 is a good basic OBD2 code reader. I found it works perfectly on my 2002 Chrysler. I plug it in, it tells me the code, I look up the instruction manual, and I know what is the problem. In my case, it was code P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor. My next challenge is to figure out where the Camshaft Posistion Sensor is located. The company web site does not give instructions on how to fix the problem. After an hour of searching on the internet, I found a web page showing me a picture of where the sensor is located, what it looks like, and many other technical information about the system. The rest was easy, buying the sensor cost me $50 and took me an hour to install. Then I use the Equus 3030 to reset the OBD2 code and turn off my yellow check engine light.
I found the Equus 3030 to be an excellent unit for occassional users like you and me. The other more expensive units does have some more features, but they are really not needed for the weekend car mechanics. The unit is compact (remember you have to store this unit for a couple of years before you use it again), well constructed, and does what it said.
Some other users comments on incompatibility with Subaru and VW. I don't know if it is still a problem, but the comments are old, and I hope the company has fixed the problem.
I do recommend this unit to all of you who are occassional car repairman. This unit will save you money in car repair. Start saving by buying this unit and not the more expensive ones.
It got the job done, read the ABS codes and I even fixed some other codes that I didn't notice before. I also love that it has a USB port that you can use to plug into your laptop or computer which can then be used to get more detailed code descriptions or save those codes for later use through their program that you can download from the Innova website.
However, there are some downsides, but considering the price and what those downsides are, it's not anything to deter you away. One thing I didn't like was that to scroll through the menu or anything alike, there's only a scroll down button. This is really terrible when you wanna get to an option or the bottom of the menu and you accidentally press the button one too many times and you pass your option or are brought back to the top of the menu. This is more of an annoyance than a problem.
Another thing is that sometimes it can be a little frustrating to erase codes. To erase codes, it says it should be as simple as pressing the red erase button and following instructions until it's complete. Often this doesn't happen exactly as proposed. I will usually attempt to erase the codes and the screen will say that it has completed and codes have been erased, but if I were to check the codes again, they would still be there. I will usually have to try to erase them 2 or 3 times before it actually works. I'm not sure if that's perhaps my bad in doing something wrong or if it actually is just a slow kind of erasing thing going or something of the sort.
Other than that, this OBD scanner has been great and it saved me from having to spend $100-$200 just for a scanner that will read ABS codes. When it comes to codes, this is now my go to tool.
1 - Follow the instructions to read your engines code(s), then come to your computer, DO NOT attach to the computer yet.
2 - Go to the website (www.innova.com), go to support, manuals and software, select "OBD2 diagnostic tools", select the model (3030f).
3 - Download the manual (.pdf) and the software which is listed for the 3030f.
4 - Install the software on your PC, run it, change the options from launch automatically to "I will start......it", leave the software open, it runs in a smallish dialog box, at the moment is says your tester is not connected.
5 - Now you can connect your tester, the obd2 software will indicate the tester is connected, and it will open an internet browser window and take you to the innova site, log on / register screen.
6 - Hit the register button, and register yourself, it will have the specifics on your device, and your vehicle, because it got them from the device when the web page opened.
7 - By virtue of purchasing the unit, you get 30 days free of unlimited reports, so don't waste it, after the free period, new reports are either going to cost you $15 a pop, or you can subscribe for an annual fee.
The reason you have to follow the above steps is because the firmware installed in the 3030F is OLD, and it loads a version of the OBD2 software that does not recognize the 3030F, and therefore you cannot connect the device, cannot register it, and cannot see any code info on the web. If the above 7 steps are troublesome to you, instead of following them, just take the device to your vehicle, read the codes, then come in to your PC and call support right off the bat, they'll walk your through the 7 steps and have you up and running, the drawback is you may have a long wait on the phone with them. If you goof it up, and let the software install from the device, you'll wind up calling them to fix it.
Bottom line, a super little device, does what it says, gets you a free super detailed trouble report with a 30 day window of time after you register the device. Enjoy!
