It works; BUT

First, let me give credit where credit is due. The product works, and it's easy to use! I was able to retrieve the codes. Some ports are inside the vehicle, my port was in the engine bay. I was able to do everything needed by myself to successfully complete the test. BUT I have 2 Negatives associated with this product. First, When I plugged the reader into the port in the engine bay nothing happened. when I unplugged it I found that 2 of the 4 Prongs had pushed into the reader. Pure Junk. So I opened it up to see what broke. To my surprize, the wires and connections were still intact. I pushed them back into placed and reglued the reader back together. I plugged it back into the port but the prongs pushed back into the reader again. The tiny little blades where the wires connect to the plastic, I guess are too small and don't hold the connectors in place. I used alligator clips on the ends of the prongs to pull the codes. Second, the booklet fell apart the moment I opened it up to read the directions and again when I was reading the code glossary. The book is poorly made as well. I see You can download the instructions from the web site but why? It comes with a booklet. (was the download an afterthought or did they know in advance) I see now that there is an extension cord you can purchase, this will certainly make it easier to use, then I see others are having the same issue with the prongs and using the cord. so it is definitely an issue with the design and the connections. If they address this issue and solve the problem, then this is a great product for the price. Seems they care a little about the product they have fixed a cheap book by putting making the directions a download. I will attempt to return the product but since I opened it up and then reglued it I doubt I get a refund!

I used this on a 1996 Ford 3.8L in my boat. There is no check engine light. Tester showed that the ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor was faulty. Waiting for new sensor to show up. Amazon sent me a replacement tester in 2 days. If the blades are in the base properly, I will upgrade my rating.

I really liked this at first but the terminal blades that protrude our the bottom were not properly “staked”, meaning they slid back into the body of the unit when I plugged the extension cord to it. I had to use needle nose pliers to pull two back out but constantly got a faulty connection. Will return for another. This is from being cheaply made. The barbs on the terminal blades are too small that are stamped into them. I suggest once you plug the extension cord in, leave it in, even in storage. I bought this because I found I absolutely could not count the times the engine light flashed or using a voltmeter with the "jumper" test.
You will need an extension to run the various test w the engine running (ie push brake/turn wheel) The test port on older vehicles is in the engine area and not under the driver's dash. IF you are buying this tool then you prob have 16g wire laying around and male/female spade connectors. Save yourself $30 and just make one. (see pix).
I could not get the engine cylinder balance check to run yet but I think that is me.
On an older vehicle, I found it to be amazing the peace of mind one gets when all the tests run and everything comes back with "ones" which indicates everything this thing tests is good to go.
