I was going to get the NETGEAR WNCE2001 Universal WiFi Internet Adapter because it's got good reviews and also I have a NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless-N300 Gigabit Router with USB WNR3500L. But I found this IOGear adapter for $20 less so I gave it a try. The unit is compact measuring 2" x 3".

Turned out to be surprisingly easy to install -- took me under 3 mins. I did not use the CD for the browser-based install. I went the easy way and it worked the first try -- after connecting the adapter to my Panasonic blu-ray player, I pressed the WPS buttons on the adapter and on my router (I use WPA2-AES). The two automatically sync up and I got netflix thru my blu-ray player.

The adapter connects to your internet device (blu-ray player, hdtv or game console) via ethernet port, so set your device configuration as using hardwire instead of wireless. The USB port is only for powering the adapter -- you can connect the USB cable to your device's USB port if there is one. If no USB port, then connect it to the included power plug, then plug that into a power socket.

I have to mention that my N router and blu-ray player are only 1 room apart, so signal strength was never a problem. I can't vouch for devices that are located many rooms/floors from the router -- in those cases you may need an extender/repeater.

UPDATE:
I also tried this adapter with my new Panasonic HDTV (ST30 series) and it works without having to reconfigure the adapter.

<update 3/6/2012>
* I now have two of these, both had outdated firmware out of the box so make sure to update to the latest firmware.
* The more I work with these the more impressed I am. There is a hidden configuration page, menu.asp, that provides access to a ton more configuration options. You can set a device password, change the IP address, change the operating modes, and tons of other options. I now have two of these on my network getting DHCP addresses for themselves, still performing their normal bridging, and locked down with passwords to keep even those on the network from fiddling with'em. Though, if you have physical access to them you can just reset them to default config by holding the RS button for 20 or so seconds. Checkout the menu.asp page on the device and you may be surprised at just how flexible these little gems can be.
* Updated from 3 - 5 stars for this, though it's unfortunate I had to stumble upon the menu.asp configuration page myself, should have been in the documentation and available from within the main interface.
</update>

<update 2/29/2012>
I found there was a firmware update available to fix a security problem so I installed that and, though it's not mentioned, it fixed the IPv6 bridging as well. The lingering issues are:
* Even after the firmware/security update for another issue, there is (so far as I can tell) still no way to set a password on the device itself.
* The fact that it is hard-coded to 192.168.1.252/24 raises some questions about having two GWU627's within the same broadcast domain.

UPDATE 2:
I gave up and returned the adapter. I may try it in the future when they have updated the firmware.

---------------------------
UPDATE: I received this from IOGEAR technical support:

"I just spoke with the product manager and he told me that he already has an updated firmware that will fix the password issue. He plans to test the firmware today and if his testing goes well we should have the update available next week. I still do not want to guarantee anything because I do not how the testing will go."

If they do correct the problem within my return window, I will keep the device and probably change to 5 star. I'll change to 3 star for now as 1 star is too harsh if they are actually correcting the problem.

---------------------------
This device sets up pretty quickly and easily. I'd like to keep it and maybe buy a 2nd, but it has a fatal security flaw. If you use manual setup, the WPA2 pre-shared key is displayed whenever you browse to the device. That means anyone on the network can easily read your wifi pre-shared key.

I've been in touch with IOGEAR and they can't promise a firmware fix. If the device required a login to administer, or even if the Pre-shared key field was a password field (display '****' instead of the actual key) it would be ok, but as it is this device is makes the Pre-shared key available for anyone on the network to see.

The wireless adapter for the XBOX 360 by Microsoft works great but it is too expensive and impractical to use because it can only be used with the XBOX 360. This fine piece of hardware by IOGEAR works flawlessly with the XBOX 360. I even plugged it in to my home computer and accessed my email with it!

One word of warning though. I had my router custom set with DD-WRT firmware and it caused a conflict. I spent several hours trying to solve the problem and I finally fixed it and thought I would share my answer to anyone experiencing similar frustration. I use WPA2 and I had my router set to WPA2-PSK only, which is the root of the problem. If you cant connect with the IOGEAR with WPA2, go to your Wireless tab, then Security and where it has the menu for the encryption type, change it from "WPA2-PSK only" to "WPA2-PSK mixed". It may also help to adjust your router if its set to AES, try TKIP, or vice-versa.

If I had not stumbled across the solution, I would have sent this wireless bridge back and missed out on a remarkable deal.

PROS:

At least $30 cheaper than Microsoft's proprietary adapter at the time of this writing.

Can be used with any device that has an ethernet plug, such as an HDTV, a computer, or a Roku unit. (Microsoft's adapter only works with the XBOX 360).

It draws power from any device containing a powered USB port.

Wireless-N

CONS:

None that I can tell, but if there are any I will update this post.
