I recently purchased Systems Mechanic from IOLO Software Labs.
I was, and still am, amazed at what it can do.
The first time I ran it, it uncovered multiple problems, which
I quickly instructed it to fix. After that, I ran it everyday
for a week, and each time it would uncover more problems.
My computer started to run better after the first time I ran
it, and got better each time it was run. After about two weeks,
things were really working great. My computer has not run this
good since I bought it, about 5 years ago.
I run Systems Mechanic twice a week now, to keep my system
running at top speed.
I've tried many other 'so called' Speed-Up programs, but this
one really works, and you get tech support with it.
It's well worth the money!
Support was useless. I contacted them via the web site. Two days later I got an e-mail telling me to run chkdsk on the drive. I responded by asking how I was supposed to run chkdsk on a system that doesn't boot, and what that had to do with their DVD software locking up. Their response was to tell me to find out the make of the drive and download the manufacturer's diagnostic software to run. Again, I asked how one does that on a system that won't boot. I was them told to take it to a service tech to look at.
In the end, the problem was that the boot sector got overwritten. A fairly simple problem which their bootable DVD locked up rather than fix.
TO be fair, I installed the software on another system to check out its system performance recommendations. NEVER accept them all. Many of the changes it recommended would, in fact, have broken applications I had running on my PC. After allowing those I considered safe, system performance was no better.
So you know where I am coming from, I have worked with computers since the Apple II, building them, repairing them, programming them. I was one of the authors of Central Point's original PC Tools system utilities. I also owned a version of this 6 years back. The quality has gone way down, and the support is completely useless.
I do not know that there is anything out there that I would recommend in its place, but I cannot recommend this as anything but a waste of your money.
in my mind they should not add any distractions to my computer and if they feel the need to put these in they should be and option that is off by default.
Other people say System Mechanic Professional slows your computer down to a standstill, and IOLO customer service is virtually non-existent. When you can reach a customer service rep they are nasty and abusive.
Buy System Mechanic Professional at your own peril, and only if you enjoy playing Russian Roulette.
The tech told me his name was Dan Clay and had an Indian Accent so thick I could hardly understand him and I have worked with many people from India over the years. I could also hear people in the background telling other people the exact same story as me. How unlucky can these other people be to have the exact same problem at the same time?
Dan told me they needed to write code to install drivers which is not true. He told me the drivers cost $200 (more than the OS), but since I was a customer they would give it to me free. [Microsoft doesn't sell drivers, they sell the operating system that contains all the drivers. If you need more drivers or an update, just use windows update. Tech's do not write code, otherwise they would be (higher paid) programmers.]
He did the thing where he put his supervisor on the phone and the supervisor sounded exactly like the him. LOL. I almost wet my pants. It was entertaining.
I did a search on 'IOLO SCAM' on Google and got lots of hits with people relating the exact same story since 2007. It's scripted. They offer to include additional software at no cost to you. Funny thing, is I already have that software because it is free, including Microsoft Essentials which is also free. During the call, they said that they did something which is technically impossible - transferring a working session to a 3rd party company. Gee, are they good!Read more ›
