This is the first time a product backed by amazon disappoints me. First of all, it does not come with the RCA cable it claims to have, this is not much of a problem, but one can tell right away that the package has been opened. I attempted to install the driver on a computer running windows 7 and another running windows 10, and none of them recognized the device. I attempted to contact customer support, but they make it very clear that they want you to try to fix the problem before you contact them. I eventually contacted and have not recieved a reply, it has been a week. Some people here have managed to get this to work, but I still think it is a bad product. If you use the software provided you can only save in mp2, which I remember reading somewhere a claim that you can save in mp4. So you are compelled to search for a software that saves in mp4, install and unistall the driver several times, and figure the whole thing out through a very stressfull process of trial and error which honestly is not worth it. If you buy this, you are paying 25 bucks on a gamble that this device may or may not work, and evven if it works, you will realize your time is worth more, so you might as well go and spend the extra bucks on something that will work right out of the box everytime.

This is the fourth video capture device I've ever bought and used. It may be the best one as well. (My first was a video capture card which I couldn't keep after I had to buy a new computer, the other two were USB devices that just didn't work.)

I had some trouble installing this because I downloaded and installed the driver for "Video 2 PC" from the ION website. Whenever I tried to start software to use the device to capture video, it crashed my system. I was about to return it when I double-checked the ION website and realized they had two video capture devices that looked about the same. As it turned out, my product was the "Video 2 PC MKII." Uninstalling the drivers I had installed and then installing the correct drivers, I got it to work like a charm.

The only reason why I'm dropping a star is that the only way to tell if you have a MKII version is to check the underside of the device. The packaging only says "Video 2 PC," making for easy confusion. I hope this warning helps. Check the underside of the device before installing drivers and make sure you download the right ones. You should be able to find the ION website easily with Google and all the drivers and software are downloadable from the product's page. However, since the included CD comes with video capture software and a key to use it, I suggest using the software on the CD.

Video capture requires a lot of disk space and memory usage. This is true with any video capture device, not just this one. As such, I suggest closing all other programs and dedicating your computer to video capture only during the process. (You might even find it helpful to disconnect your internet connection at the time.) If not, you may get stuck frames, garbled audio, etc. If you're short on disk space, try experimenting with different capture settings to find one that will capture video quickly and at a small file size (Power Director's DivX setting worked for me just fine). If you have plenty of disk space to spare, it's highly recommended to capture video with MPEG-2 video and uncompressed audio and then worry about cutting down the file size in editing afterward.

I used the device with the video capture software I've been using for awhile and it did a serviceable job, but then I tried the included version of Cyberlink Power Director 8 and the results were much better: the image was much more stable and had less flickering color than the other software. Since I was capturing VHS (one that was about 20 years old), only a couple filters were needed to improve the look of the video. Cyberlink, however, will not capture video from copy-protected cassettes. My other capture software, VHS To DVD 3.0 Deluxe [OLD VERSION ], does however. (Please note that if you're going to do this, copyright laws need to be respected. Only transfer such videos that you own for your own uses.)

So, it should work fine, if you make sure to install the correct drivers and have a good system for video capture. (I'm on a Windows 7 computer with 4GB of RAM and a 2.0Ghz processor.)

Does good job after some struggles

A good product after a few struggles. I first installed the software and driver on my older Sony Vaio with Windows Vista because of reviews stating that users had problems using it with Windows 10. However, after installation the computer would not recognize the device stating that the driver could not be found. After several reboots and reinstallations of the driver and software, I gave up and tried installing on my new HP Envy with Windows 10. Everything when smoothly and the device was immediately recognized. The device and software smoothly copied a video from one of my old 26 year old video 8 tapes using my old camcorder. I was confused at first as when the device was plugged into the computer the camcorder icon would not light up, Instead the TV icon lit up. Clicking the TV icon started the tape playing on the camcorder. With one tape I exceeded the capacity of the DVD disk and had to manipulate the software to trim the file down before burning to the DVD. The software has many functions and some of them not all that clear even accessing help, but after much trial and error I was able to figure out how to trim the file down a bit to fit on a DVD. I did get several blue screens when manipulating the software, which apparently suggests a driver issue of some kind. Over all the device does its job and the software, complex and many functioned, does requires a learning curve but does its job. The resulting DVDs worked fine on my Blueray player,

wow. you learn so much about your life just watching old 8mm tapes.
Some really cool memories that I was just too young to have a recollection of.

Software has it's kinks, but it should work on windows 10.
you just have to:
1. put CD and let autorun.
2. click install drivers and cyberlink. let it finish.
3. after its finished its gonna restart? i can't recall
4. after it restarts bring up the CD software again, and click install once more. Now the CyberLink program will download.
5. happily use software and stroll down memory lane.

If you have a lot of 8mm tapes you would like to convert to computer files, this is a great buy.
2 hours of footage is averaging about 8.5GB so be prepared
