If you fail to plug this thing in every couple of months or so you are in for a surprise when you try to use it. Let is sit in the closest for more than about 6 months and it becomes and $180 brick. Apparently if you do not maintain a charge on this thing and it runs to absolute zero, the lead acid battery will NEVER..and I repeat NEVER hold a charge again. Yes this is mentioned in small print deep in the manual but who reads those! They should put a big sticker on it WARNING you of this problem. In my case, we used it exactly once. Put it in the closest for 8 months and tried to use it again and it was DEADER than a door nail, never to hold a charge again.
After a great deal of research we learned you can get the battery out and were able to buy a replacement at Radio Smack for $35 but come on...use it once, put it away and it is dead...forever?...what were they thinking.
So, IF you buy this do not even think about tossing it in the closest. Keep it charged or you too will be doomed. All in all a great device but has a serious shortcoming that they are not very forthcoming about telling you. Consider yourself warned.
In case you have done some research and also happened to stumble on the ION Block Rocker while contrasting with the Alesis TransActive Mobile, you need not do too much comparison if you have all information available for these two units before realizing that they are both built on virtually the same housing chassis and contain virtually all of the same internal electronics and feature capabilities. As a matter of fact, they are also built at the same manufacturing plant in Cumberland, RI. Whether or not ION is some sort of subsidiary of Alesis or shares some common denominators with them on a corporate level, or if, simply, some of their gear happens to be made at the same plant, I do not know, but I do have both of these units and can tell you that they are both excellent for their intended purposes, especially for the purchase price. The Alesis can be purchased at 200.00 including shipping, and the ION for 170.00, also including shipping...both through Amazon. Considering they are both pretty much the same unit, obviously the ION is a slightly better value.
Both have a very good sound on the high and midrange levels for a PA of their size, and a somewhat limited bass due to the diaphragm size of the conventional push-pull woofer driver. Both are easy to use from a standpoint of feature accessibilities, with gain controls and line and mic inputs all on the front panel, as well as a 1/4" instrument jack and separate volume controls for each input.
Minor differences: the Alesis has the on/off, power chord outlet, stereo quarter inch speaker output for accommodating a second passive speaker for stereo sound, IPod charge switch and battery level meters on a top rear panel while the ION has them on the right side. Aside from the color differences (Alesis is black while the ION is white), other minor differences are that the ION has recessed side handles while the Alesis has metal retracting handles which, given the weight of the unit, does feel like it is under some stress while lifting. The telescoping tote-handle and rubberized castors for rolling these units are both pretty much identical. Both are good features and well-manufactured in order to make transport on smooth surfaces more manageable.
The microphones and mic chords are also identical, and are good quality considering they are included accessories. One last difference is that the Alesis also includes a quarter inch to XLR audio chord in addition to the AC power and mic chords, while the ION just includes the power and mic chords.
Considering these units were priced out with an MSRP of 400.00 - 600.00 each, they are definitely worth every penny for a portable PA with power to size output, good sound, ease of use, and additional features, especially the IPod doc. I am speculating that after observing and utilizing both of these units first hand, the only reason the ION has a lower MSRP is that it was manufactured to be a more cost-effective line in comparison the well-known and long-established Alesis brand, even though it couldn't cost any less to manufacture the ION.
I would say this is better suited to a room of 40-50 people. The reviewer who is using for listening in airplane hanger, I find it hard to see this would give enough volume for me in that big a space!
I also bought this Pyle: Pyle-Pro PWMA930I 600-Watt VHF Wireless Portable PA System/Echo with iPod Dock
The Pyle inputs and controls I liked better than the Ion. And it's a little heavier/more solid/better build than the Ion... and the Pyle has an ok (ho hum) mic... but I'm returning the Pyle b/c of the output jack. And because I'm annoyed by the "600 watt" claim Pyle made... this 22 watt Ion is not much different in actual power.
While larger models would work better and be louder than this, the portability and ability to use it on a moving school bus or even in the backyard without having to run an extension cord really makes this unit a dream.
If you are looking to host a backyard birthday party or a pool party where you don't want to have wires running about, this is your item. It is made very well and I imagine we will be using it for years to come, in lieu of setting up a full-scale speaker system for smaller events.

I have an interest in playing the trumpet and I would like to someday go busking with some backing accompanying me, but most of the small amps I have seen really are built for guitarists. The trumpet of course doesn't need amplification.
This amp is perfect. Its just a pa amp for the ipod. It has three inputs: microphone, second instrument, and a RCA input for, say, a CD player.
I am awaiting for my ipod to arrive so I plugged in an old CD walkman via the rca's. It worked absolutely brilliantly.
I think the power should be sufficient for my needs but I haven't proven this yet. It comes with a microphone, too, so I am off to "speakers corner" next week (joke).
It looks good. Looks robust and well made. Even has a point so that you can mount it on a vertical pole.
I have an old tripod for a satellite dish and I put this on it and it has turned this into a brilliant PA on a stand. This set up will work well for small barbecues, parties or other functions. The specifications say the amp once charged, will last for 12 hours at full volume. That is incredible.
I tried my friends ipod and it worked a treat. It is so simple to use.The sound is clear and the bass pleasant.
The company that supplied it to me did so really quickly, within a day or two, far quicker than I thought they would take. Well done ACS Media!
Tomorrow, I will go out to practise and I will see how sufficient the power is in the open. I couldn't do so in my flat. I normally practise out in the open, as I hate mutes, and this will give me some backing for various practise. The long time the amp lasts means I won't have to take a bag of batteries with me. The ipod, when it comes, should mean too that I shouldn't need to take loads of CDs.
I am really inspired and pleased, so far, that I have bought it. Just what I was looking for!
Easy to operate (even for elderly dodderers) both indoors or outside, smart looking yet robust, not too heavy to carry by side handles or roll alond on its wheels, it fitted easily onto a tripod to give it extra height and broadcasting area, producing really good quality sound. Last year without the PA most of the congregation couldn't hear the outdoor service from our hilltop but this year we all heard every word: same for the music played from my iPod Nano - we had people singing and dancing along with the carols.
Recommended highly for quality, price, looks and performance.
I should have known there was a problem the first time I used it...on higher volume settings the battery could not handle the power demand.
Anyhow managed to get a new battery...and again it quit after a few (4 uses)
Whats more it can't even cope with higher sound settings when plugged in...
Good idea...but useless product. I will not be purchaseing ION equipment again.
We used the speaker to also play our Wedding dances video I'd made up, this was hooked up to the laptop that played the wedding video via the audio input panel on the front.
On the whole a great speaker for all occasions, I know use it in my study / games room.
Very pleased.
