This corkscrew has the screw centered along a perpendicular axis. The result is that the cork is entered perpendicularly into the top surface of the cork. This makes the entry of the screw into the cork clean and straight with no destruction of the cork.

Other corkscrews have screws which are off-centered and are formed like a curlicue with the point stopping at angle to the cork surface. The design of these corkscrews often result in cork damage, particularly if the cork has dried up a bit, and often results in the cork breaking apart and not being able to be removedl
