This product works as advertised. Various sizes for various problems. The easyouts will work if a little common sense is used while removing sheared bolts. Lubricant (penetrating) should be used as well as not brute forcing them. Steady pressure is better than jerky motions that can shear the tool. Recommended.

Nice set, and seemed to be good quality. Ordered these to take care of an issue I had with an air compressor in a very remote area where no stores were available to buy these type of tools. They worked perfectly. Needed a lot of torque to get out a broken valve, and I was worried that perhaps the quality of extractors would not hold, but it did, and worked as needed. (I bought an over-sized crescent wrench to put on a lot of torque, and it held beautifully. If the extractor would have been prone to fail, it would have failed on this job.) You can spend a lot more, but for my very occasional use, this was a good investment. I doubt I will ever need to buy anything better.

I bought one of these in the ex-2 size at the hardware store (same brand as here) and used it to extract one rusty screw from the car's license plate holder before it snapped as I tried to extract the other screw. I used a T-handle so basically I broke it by hand. After breaking off the screw head to extract the extractor I stupidly bought another thinking I might have better luck. The second extractor snapped too. In the photo you'll see what looks like a tiny screw. That's the screw head with a piece of the extractor stuck in it.

Since it's almost impossible to drill through the extractor with the tools I have and other tools would damage the car I gave up and used adhesive.

Bottom line is this extractor can work but is not nearly as durable as you might think for something made from hardened steel.

If you have something that's really stuck maybe another kind of extractor is best. Once it snaps off it's hard to get out. Do a search for how to extract broken screw extractors and you'll see a lot of unfortunate souls tearing their hair out.

This is my first time using this type of product. The radio antenna on my truck snapped off at the threaded adapter and half of the adapter was stuck inside the antenna housing. To replace that part would have been $40. For $11 I thought I'd give this a try and it worked...once I was able to drill a hole into the adapter piece to get the extractor started. There were no instructions on the packaging, so I first tried to drill the extractor itself into the adapter. That went nowhere. Once I drilled a small hole with a regular drill bit, it came out with the extractor immediately. I did notice some very slight damage to the tip of the extractor after all my previous drilling efforts, but it still worked. Had there been any instructions at all, the process probably would have taken 2 mins tops. I'm happy with the set and will use them again.

This is one of several types of extractors and you should try them all. This type squeeses the broken bolt even tighter in it's hole but covers a larger grip area. The square extractor type covers only the top edge of the hole drilled in the broken bolt, covering a very small area but has a much firmer bite after hammering it into the hole. The key to any extraction is to 1)drill through the CENTER OF THE BOLT 2)IT'S ENTIRE LENGTH! This relieves pressure equally on the bolt. These extractors are not 100% successful but it's a first step. The 100% successful way is to heat the area AROUND the bolt (DO NOT HEAT THE BOLT!) with intense heat as FAST as you can using an oxygen/acetelyne torch. The heat expands the surrounding area AWAY from the broken bolt and the bolt will unscrew with ease. 100%. Do NOT use a butane torch-it will heat the surrounding area and the bolt at the same time.

I had never heard of screw extractors until I entered a search question regarding removing a screw that broke. Screw extractors were the answer, so I bought these as I had a handle that screwed into a tank but broke off. I had tried everything I could think of and had no luck removing the remaining portion of the screw. (All I needed was one of these and a tap wrench.) Within seconds I had the piece of screw out and in the trash. I was able to screw in a new handle w/o incident and the tank is now usable and repaired!

I used the second-to-the largest for removing a pipe nipple that had broken off in the bung at the top of my large air compressor. I had tried a straight, fluted pipe nipple remover that didn't have a hope of working. The Irwin spiral flute extractor worked perfectly. I had to resort to an 18 inch crescent wrench but with slow and steady pressure and a lot of torque, it finally broke free. I used some PB Blaster to prep it about a day beforehand. I was really reefing on that wrench thinking the extractor would likely break, but it did the job and came through it like a champ with absolutely no damage to the extractor but certainly some great and effective gouges on the inside of the pipe nipple. Thanks for a great product. I now have my working compressor back and a pouch full of extractors ready for my next task.
