In all fairness

1. The jaws are indeed bowed - on purpose. Since the jaws are relatively thin (as compared to a bench vise), they can flex slightly when clamped. This has the effect of reducing the clamping force at outer corners of flat jaws. To compensate, the jaws are bowed slightly to preload them when clamped. So when the jaws are clamped, the bow flattens out to create 100% contact with the workpiece. You can see the same thing at work in big semi-trailers, especially the open flat beds. When empty, the trailer arches noticibly upward, but the arch flattens out when loaded with cargo.

2. Newell Rubbermaid did indeed close the DeWitt, OK plant, and American jobs were lost, but the operations are now in Taiwan, which not exactly China (especially in the minds of the Taiwanese). In reality, mainland China can produce products of very high quality - when contracted and paid to do so. The Taiwanese can and usually do even better - look up semiconductor giant TSMC. Ultimately the sad truth is that chintzy tools can be made anywhere in the world.

3. Having used vise-grips of all kinds for almost 50 years, I frankly don't see any difference in quality between those made in the US and those made in Taiwan. The Vise-Grip brand still counts for better quality than the knock-offs. None of them are precision tools - they're just four link pliers that lock. But like duct tape, vise grips fill a niche well enough that both have become icons.

So bottom line, I give them four out of five stars - say an 85%, which is a "B" grade. Accordingly they will handle 85% of the work thrown at them.

Vise-grip products are pretty sturdy and can take a lot of abuse. The sheet-metal tool is no exception. It not only will clamp and hold a wider surface area than other grips, you can use it to get a nice, crisp fold in a variety of metals. Sheets that are longer than the jaw of the tool are not a problem--you can just move the tool along and there is no buckle or fold between the placements.
I'm a tinsmith, and I use this tool pretty regularly. There are more expensive such tools around, with compound action, etc., but unless you use such a tool professionally and/or on extremely heavy-duty material, this is the best bang for the buck. And, once you have one, you'll wonder how you went so long without it.

The Irwin name lives up with these duck bills, if you're in sheet metal, you should have one of these in your arsenal. Although the bill itself may need to be customized with something. Most use Duct Tape or Electrical Tape but I'm sure there's some other means of coating you can use to soften the grip on painted metal. Overall, it's a very good tool to use, but for wider or deeper surfaces, you may want to get something more formidable, like some Fairmonts or one with a changeable bill. For 15$ though, you can't go wrong with the many applications this wondrous tool has.

Vise Grip tools has always had a place in my toolbox. The price listed for these pliers was lower than usual so I sent for the pliers and they were delivered promptly but upon reading the box I found that these pliers are now made in Taiwan. You can tell from the feel that they are inferior to the older ones made in America. If you need these type of pliers and don't care where they are made then these should meet your needs. I don't like to support offshore jobs.

I needed to do just a little sheet metal work, and these were perfect. They cost about 1/3 of the cheapest similar product at the big home improvement stores. They are like any other Vise-Grip, but made for bending sheet metal.

This tool is well constructed and functions perfectly to bend HVAC sheet metal to desired angle. It is especially useful for installing duct transitions flanges and for general sheet metal bending. I use it and I would buy in again, I recommend this product, it does what it was designed to.

I bought this to try and straighten out the rain gutters on my SUV after someone bent them up stealing the roof rack off my truck.

I think these work as well as should be expected, but they did not really work well for what I was trying to do.

I expect I'll have much better luck using these to work with much thinner sheet metal than what I was using them on.

As for the rain gutters, I'll need to pay a body shop to tinker with them or just have ugly drip rails.

My use for these may not be for sheet metal as I use these to hold guitar nuts and/or bridges which are thin and not very wide so that I can use table belt sander without sanding my fingertips! Very easy to adjust with the perfect tension.
