So I stopped feeding him the dog food and started feeding him rice and chicken. At first I didn’t suspect it was the dog food since its the same brand that I’ve been feeding him. After a day of rice and chicken his stool started looking normal. So 2 days later, I assumed that it is safe to return back to the dog food. After his FIRST MEAL! and first stool after that meal the diarrhea is BACK! I was so nervous and looked back on the 1 star ratings of this food and people have had bad experience with this dog food. Same story as mine, puppy got diarrhea for a couple of days, some even weeks! Im so pissed and terrified at the same time, my poor puppy lost so much weight! Anyway, I have learned my lesson. Try on your own risk. Some people say their pups love it, so goodluck.
I am well versed on how to wean a puppy and to switch food slowly, it really didn't matter what I tried neither of the puppies adjusted very well.
I decided to try IAMS because I have used it in the past with a Doberman I owned, and had great success with it.
The fact that IAMS offers a Large Breed Puppy was a HUGE plus.
When the first bag came and I opened it, my male literally stuck his face in the bag and started eating it. I thought to myself, get ready for major bouts of diahrrea because I literally couldn't pry his face from the bag!
Much to my surprise, both the dogs loose stools were firm in a day or two from switching and didn't smell half as bad as when they were fed "The Good Stuff"
They have beautiful coats and are growing as they should. They are very active and to be honest, even a bit smarter.
I swear by this particular food and am thrilled with the price as well!
We have 2 Great Dane puppies. They could easily eat us out of house and home with the prices on some brands of quality dog food. These dogs eat a lot and have a very high metabolism because they do grow so fast. That helps a lot in assessing the different foods because the proof is in the pudding.
Iams was best in reference to several factors:
Amount of food ingested
Ability to grow & put on weight
Shine & appearance of the coat
The quality & amount of stool
The dogs like & consume Iams
The dogs felt good with plenty of energy
When we looked at all these factors, Iams was the easy first choice. The affordability in feeding Iams was an unexpected benefit.
