Ice Crown (The Elements of Kamdaria) Kindle Edition
The competition could save her life...
But only if she wins.
Talise can manipulate the elements with ease. Water, air, earth, and fire all bend to her will. As a citizen of the Storm—a crime-laden land where death is the only constant—her only chance for a better life is to become Master Shaper.
A competition for the position takes place at the end of her training years. If she wins, she would live in the palace, work for the emperor, and escape her inevitable death in the Storm. But she’s not the only one with a chance to win.
Aaden is another talented student. As a citizen of the Crown, he was born with unlimited privilege and resources. When someone from the Crown wants to win, they do. End of story. And his shaping is unlike anything Talise has ever seen.
Complicating matters, Talise’s loved one in the Storm gives her reason to abandon the competition altogether, forcing her to make an impossible choice.
Torn between duty and freedom, she must learn that clinging to the past, might destroy her future.
For fans of Throne of Glass and Shadow and Bone, this completed series is the perfect binge read for those who love epic fantasy, royalty, intrigue, and elemental magic.

But Talise has the rarest of gifts, as a child. She can shape the 4 elements - air, earth, Fire and Water. Because of those gifts, she is admitted to the Academy and has a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete with others and become Master Shaper and work directly for the King. It is the only way to leave the Storm.
Her only true competition is Aidan, who is also a gifted student at the academy and her only real competition. They are fierce rivals. After ten years of focus and study, the day for the ultimate magical competition arrives.
A beguiling story and really well written, strong heroine, with powerhouse supporting characters. Aidan is a character with a dark foil that contrasts with the bright spirit that is Talise, but the book ends on a cliffhanger, and I dislike immensely.
Regardless, Ice Crown is a worthwhile read.

My attempt at a summary:
A story about a strong female lead named Talise, to leave the only person she loves behind and to escape her current circumstances. Her only way out is to prove herself with her element manipulation called shaping. It almost gives me the Avatar Airbender vibe. There is a tier system of sorts where she is looked and treated as the worst and its labeld as "storm".
It's really important to see the mal nutrition and lack of resources and the fact that everyone else treats them lower than dirt. For if Talise doesn't reach the number one spot at the end of 10 years, she gets sent right back to where she comes from. Knowing that there is so much at stake gives the story urgency, and even intensity.
I like how at the end of time period she has grown a sense of ease and confidence only to face someone who is better than she is and has a mad scramble to improve her talents of element shaping.
I liked what I read, loved it!! And I will be reading the rest. Below is something I would of liked to see.
(Spoilers and Suggestions)
I would of liked to see more of her learning years instead of the jump to present. Or more flashbacks on how she obtained her skills. I feel like this would of given a better appreciation of what she can do now, to know how she started.
I just felt I wanted to learn more about her, more stories when she was living in the storm area, what other people were doing to survive other than her and her mom.
The antagonist, I'd of liked to see more interaction, negative or positive. I feel like we only get a small glimpse so I'm not sure how the author wanted us to feel about him.
This could of easily been a novel of 1000 pages if she wanted...or even the next HP series. I hoped she will take my words as positive reinforcement and not neg criticism. I truly did enjoy this read.
Despite its short length, we were given a good background on the division and strife within this world. Those who live in the Storm - the desolate lands of hunger and strife where even collecting rainwater to assuage thirst is a crime - will never be granted freedom from that life unless they master all four elements in an award-winning display before the emperor. Talise knows that it is her only chance at a life beyond the Gate, where she won't have to spend each day struggling to survive, a life her Marmie sacrificed so much to help her strive for.
This was definitely an introductory novella, one where nothing was really concluded or achieved, but enough of a taste that the vivid descriptions will have you eager to continue on within this world.

Talise is from 'the Storm' the land on the outskirts of civilisation inhabited by the outcasts and criminals. Where the chances of living to a ripe old age is non existent. Her only chance of a better life and survival is to become a Master Shaper.
After 10 years at the academy for those with elemental shaping abilities, a final competition will decide if she will become a Master Shaper and have the life she could only dream about, or return to the Storm and wait for death.
Talise is really young when we first meet her and we get to see the familial bond she has with Marmia. It doesn't seem important at the time but it is the relationship that drives our MC throughout the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and now NEED to read the trilogy!! Episode one is a delightful taste of the story we will get and really does serve as a pilot to hook you into the world and story

Ice Crown is the first book in The Elements of Kamdaria Series by Kay L Moody. It is a YA Fantasy- with magic, mystery, action, and adventure. It has a bit of an Avatar The Last Airbender feel to the story- but definitely has its own unique identity.
I found the story to be well written and thought Ms. Moody got this new series off to a great start! I Loved her Truth Seer Trilogy, so I was intrigued by what I would find inside the cover of this book. I think this series holds great promise, and if this book is anything to go by the rest of the series looks set to be fantastic.
My only issue is with the novella length to the book- as I felt that it suffered a little from a lack of more ‘meat’ to the story. Trying to keep within certain page ‘constraints’ seemed to me to result in skipping over a lot of ‘time’ and other details- which if they’d been included would have beefed-up the story and made it something I could have really sunk my teeth into. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy it, because I did. I just thought it would have been a more ‘epic’ adventure- if it had been fleshed out more. I am hoping that the rest of the books are a little longer and more ‘meaty’.
Talise is a wonderful MC- she’s strong, talented, clever, and interesting. She’s one determined young lady. It was easy to like her and invest in her and the outcome of her story.
I am intrigued to see where the series goes- and can’t wait for book #2.
Thank You, Kay L. Moody!
