Ice Kissed is a great sequel in the Kanin Chronicles that is full of action, adventure, and romance. It will definitely please fans of the series and Amanda Hocking fans alike. Full of deception and betrayals at every turn, you never know what to expect! The story will have you on the edge of your seat (most times), and leave you breathless until the very last page. The ending of this novel alone makes this entire book worth reading, and in you will be longing to get your hands on the next book. Let me tell you, I'm expecting BIG things to happen in the next book based off of this ending, and I know Amanda Hocking will not let me down. It is going to be one killer finale!
I was very excited for this novel as I have always loved the world Amanda Hocking created originally in the Trylle Trilogy. This book made me remember why I loved the world so much. Rich and lush descriptions of Skojare palace left you feeling like you were actually there, with the coldness and conspiracy seeping into your bones. Suffice to say, I loved the entire time Bryn was in the Skojare palace. There were so many twists and turns that happened during this time that I couldn't stop reading.
The plot of this novel was also very good. However, the reason I had to go down a bit in the actual rating was the up and down feeling of the plot. I know I didn't go down much, but this aspect of the plot did prevent me from actually giving it a full 5 stars. For me, there were parts of this book that were absolutely phenomenal and I couldn't read fast enough, but then there were other parts that I felt were added just to make the book longer or just were just kind of there. As such, there were highs and lows. These parts weren't exactly boring, but they weren't really necessary either. I guess what I mean is that I didn't find it as exciting as the first book. Don't get me wrong, the story was still an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride, but not as much of a thrill ride as the first book in the series.
However, the writing was still amazing as ever. I have always loved Amanda Hocking's writing. She crafts such wonderful worlds that you simply never want to leave. And when you pick up her stories again, it feels like coming home. That is always the sign of a good storyteller. She gives her characters so much growth and depth that you feel as if you truly know these characters, but you never get bored with them either. In the end, they feel like friends. Bryn is such a strong heroine, and I have loved her character from the beginning. She has such a determination to succeed and overcome all of the obstacles that are in her path. She never lets her differences get to her, and always does her own thing. Most importantly, Bryn never loses herself or give into others demands of what is expected of her. She lives her own life, how she wants to live her life.
The romance in this one is steamy, especially one scene in particular. You'll know exactly what scene I'm talking about once you read it. And trust me, it will leave you fangirling so hard. I have shipped Ridley and Bryn from the moment I met them, and this book just made my shipping of them go into overdrive. They are seriously so perfect and one of my favorite couples. As long as Konstantin doesn't interfere with their relationship, I'll be a happy fangirl.
Overall, while there were parts that weren't the most exciting, Ice Kissed is still a very worthy sequel in the Kanin Chronicles, and is not to be missed by fans of the series. If you haven't checked this series out yet, you need to because you don't want to miss out on a new favorite!! I can't wait for the final book, Crystal Kingdom as it is sure to be an amazing end to an amazing series!
Happy reading :)
This time around, Bryn spends a great deal of time with the Skojare people. I really enjoyed getting to learn more about their history, especially since it's part of her heritage, as her mom is from here. I have to say, there's a lot things going on here, and while I was able to figure out a few things, Hocking does a great job at keeping some things complex. There's a lot of things happening within this story, and just as Bryn gets close to figuring out who's behind all the trouble, the table turns, and she finds herself on the run.
I've also enjoyed Bryn's character, but there were a few times I did get a little frustrated with her in this book. I love her circle of friends, and the relationship she has with them, and her family. I have to say, this time around Ridley and Bryn together really annoyed me. The reason being is that they need to hurry up and figure out what it is they both want. Okay, there's more to it, but for the sake of spoilers, I'll leave it at that. Can I just say, there's scene between the two of them that, well I'll just say it, was awkward. At least I felt it was. When you read it, you'll know the scene I'm talking about. Maybe I feel that way because I started losing interest in the two of them together, because how back and forth they both were for much of the book.
One of the things I love about Hocking's writing is her world building, and the lore she has created within Bryn's world. It's fascinating, and it's part of what makes this series so addicting. I love how she's crafted Bryn's world, and tied the various characters together. There's a lot of history between the different realms, and I'm anxious to learn more about them. I've realized that I really need to go read Hocking's other series. I've got her books sitting on my shelves, but dived right into this series before I read them.
Along with Bryn and Ridley's relationship, I have to say I felt there were a few things that took away from me really liking this book. Yes it was fast paced, and I read it in one sitting. Yes, I liked the book, however, I felt that there times where the story stalled, or dragged, though only briefly. For example, readers are already made aware of at the beginning of the book that Black and Dalig are still being on the run, but through out the book it's mentioned repeatedly that they're on the run. Sometimes I think when things are overly emphasized, it takes away from the story more than it should, which was the case for me. Over all I did enjoy Ice Kissed. Out of the two, Frost Fire is still my favorite. I liked the direction this story takes, but I felt there was more with Frost Fire that hooked me.
The last part of the book was where things really took off for me. I love it when an author keeps me on my toes, which Hocking does. A lot of things going on behind the scenes, that make it hard to pin point what exactly is happening, and which characters are behind it. I love the twists, and the impossibility of figuring out if Dalig and Black are really to blame or other characters that Bryn is close to. There are some newer characters who play bigger roles in this book, and I've got my suspicions about them. While Hocking does wrap up a few things, this book ends on one heck of a cliff hanger. Holy white rabbit, that was an awesome place to end the book. Now I need the next book! Whether you've read Amanda's other series or not, I totally recommend picking up this series!
On a side note, I LOVE this cover!
So we pick-up right were we left off, I mean literately it's just been one day since the end of Frostfire. Bryn is just a passionate as every about protecting the Kingdom, and because of this she is a little hard on herself. She works hard and is good at what she does but she sacrifices a personal life to do so. She believes that she can either have a life or have her career but she can't have both. It's funny how some people feel that, even at this day and age. However as time passes Bryn starts to realize just how strong her feelings for Ridley are, she also sees Kasper (her bf Tilda's boyfriend and her new partner on the case) and starts to realize that maybe she can have it all.
Kasper is part of the elite Hogdragen Guard, and as I stated before he is involved with Bryn's best friend Tilda. Kasper and Bryn are sent to the Skojare to help out after an incident occurs and windup involved in a mystery at the Skojare Palace. Through their time together at the Palace, Kasper and Bryn form a friendship. They work together well, and appreciate each other. They do the best that they can but things go totally awry. There is an attempted murder, someone being thrown in prison and total chaos ensues.
The royalty at the Palace thanks them but sends Kasper and Bryn back home and that is when the s*** hits the fan. Bryn figures out only part of the mystery and some totally unexpected events happen, right along with an totally unexpected ending. Ice Kissed was amazing and I cannot wait to read the third and final book in the Kanin Chronicles, Crystal Kingdom.
