This book sucked me in and then had me almost hold my breath till the very last word.
It was consuming in a way I'm not even sure books are allowed to be.
Even though this is so short, it packs so much into it. Otec is such a quiet boy and I loved seeing him go from the quiet, insecure boy, into the clan chief we know him to be. It was nice to see Ilyennas parents and who they were before she came along. Ilyenna is more like her mother than I thought!
This was an intense, action packed, and fast paced read and a great addition to this series. This series is one of my favourites and I urge everyone to give it a go.
Melissa Reizian Frank was amazing. She has such a distinctive voice and has a lot of different tones and voices, that it brought the story to life. I really enjoyed her narration.
*I received a copy of this for review. This in no way affected my thoughts.*
Upon returning to the village, he found all the men had gone to fight the Raiders near the coast. Hundreds of Highmen from Svassheim was camped at the east end of the village. Matka was unlike any woman he had ever met before. She is small yet strong, beautiful and creative. Fearless and vulnerable at the same time.
She convinces Otec to take her up in the mountains to find a particular flower that she needs. After two days climbing the mountain, they wake up to find his village is being raided. They can see the houses burning. Realizing Matka and her people betrayed them, his fury consumes him.
Aching to return home to save his family, Matka convinces him to travel to the next village for help and reinforcements. How can he trust her when she is the enemy?
Otec is thrust into becoming leader of his clan. Unprepared and unwilling, he must lead his men into war to protect the Shyle. He must become a man fast and make hard decisions for the best of the clan.

The author makes a solid effort in constructing her world, her characters, and her story. My only drawback to this book: no clear directions for our main characters. Yes, there were some good twists, some very good writing, but in the end the story just didn't hold up.
