Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Sinead OBrien is a top female litigator in New York City and a workaholic. Adam Perrys hard-hitting style is legendary among hockey players and fans, and Blades management hopes hell inspire the team to win the Stanley Cup. But although a recent hit was legal according to the rules of the game, an ambitious district attorney has charged him with assault. And while the league is officially supporting Adam, behind the scenes its another matter. Martins sexy contemporary romance offers banter (although once Sinead gets Adam to start talking, she finds that hes a very private person) and an unusual juxtaposition of careers (Adams good friend and sounding board is a chef, and Sineads family owns and operates the family pub where the team congregates). This may appeal to fans of Julie James law-firm romances as well as sports enthusiasts, making Martin a good bet for readers who enjoy Carly Phillips (baseball) and Susan Elizabeth Phillips (football). --Lynne Welch

OK, so here's the problem for me as a 'New York Blades' reader:

The author started a series about this hockey team. And for the first few books, her continuity was good. Characters from the previous books appeared in her new books, and they did their various schticks in the middle of the newest couple...but the characters were very consistent over those first few books, references to characters from previous books or previous happenings were 'correct'. And then somehow, Martin got off on a tangent that ended up in restaurants/bars--in Ireland in the last book!--which, given that I started reading the series because the hockey players thing was a little different, was kind of aggravating, because every other romance out there seems to have a restaurant/bar in it. But finally, FINALLY, after 3 or maybe even 4 books, she gets back to the hockey team---

And her continuity is out the window!

One of her antagonists is compared to Paul Van Dorn, which I suppose might be useful shorthand to someone who's read the series, IF, IF, IF the character actually ACTED like Paul. Which he doesn't, in fact. Paul was arrogant, but he wasn't a deliberately obstructive POS. Ty isn't just grouchy--Ty has a serious bug up his fundament, and frankly, Ty's not supposed to be old enough to be a straight up curmudgeon. And Anthony??? Is not that reasonable. Jason Mitchell appears, but where is Stanley? One of the major plot points of that book was Stanley the Newfoundland as a good luck charm for the Blades. When they started losing games, why didn't Michael suggest Jason get Stanley?!? Even just a throwaway line like "Delilah took the dogs to the farm with her" would have maintained the frame of this little world.

To those persons who think romance novels are just a bunch of fluff – I give you the books of Deirdre Martin. These are indeed contemporary romance novels, but they spill over with real characters in them doing real things, just like real people! They laugh, they cry, they experience hardship, they work hard and play hard, and sometimes suffer losing a job, or a lover. They’re profane, and sometimes their actions may be close to over the top, but basically, they’re solid family folks. They’re also very sexy (sensual) people!

Her current series is primarily about an Italian family in Brooklyn, NY, but with tentacles reaching into many directions—not what you’re thinking, either! One brother, Anthony, is an award-winning chef (married to another award-winning chef, although she’s French!) and another brother, Michael, is a former hockey player, now a coach for the New York Blades. The books vary from an emphasis on hockey to those with an emphasis on food. Many of the characters wander from book to book, as well. They are all routinely wonderful.

Of course, having a hockey team in the middle of things provides opportunities to bring in new characters and this one presents a new (imported) defenseman as captain. Adam Perry has been accused of being too aggressive, and the team hires Sinead O’Brien as his attorney. Ice chips and sparks fly as these two battle to come to grips with the situation and each other. Fabulous read!

I love the Blades Series. The sports action is accurate and intense. Deidre Martin does a great job on her heroes and their women. Sinead is a strong woman and Adam a complex man, but they fit. It's a great story about fighting for the love you want. A must read if you love romance and sports romance in particular.

Who can resist a fiery hot hockey player like Adam Perry? Lawyer Sinead O'Brian certainly tries but to no avail. Things are complicated because workaholic Sinead is the litigator assigned to clear Adam of assault charges and failure is not an option. Then again, falling in love with this powerful and handsome man isn't supposed to be one either.

Sinead O'Brian lives to work. Since her divorce she has immersed herself into her career so as to guard her heart. It's hard enough being a lawyer but being a female lawyer in a male dominated field just means that she has more to give up and lose should she be anything but the best. Called into the NY Blades hockey office, Sinead is given the task of defending team caption and player Adam Perry against a blown up charge of assault. This is easier said than done because Adam is not the easiest man to talk to and he is definitely not giving up any information on himself without a fight.

Adam Perry is the new captain of the NY Blades hockey team. He has a job to do and does it very well - no one is tougher on the ice than Adam and his teammates and opponents almost fear him - they absolutely don't want to tangle with him, that's for sure. When he is targeted by a possible assault charge for doing what he does best on the ice, Adam knows that he is going to have to cooperate with the lawyer hired to defend him - he just didn't know that he would have to make his heart cooperate as well.

More than once Sinead and Adam clash while making his case - Sinead knows there is more to Adam than meets the eye. She just doesn't realize that in defending this handsome and hard man she would become familiar with the person he is on the inside.
