The story is told from Keith and Austin’s alternating point of view.
Another story from the Dreamspinner Press 2016 Advent Calendar Bah Humbug series, which is a great view of the holidays, why some people do not find it as wonderful as others. For this story, Keith works retail and for anyone who has done that, well, that is enough to not be finding as much joy in the season as many! Winter storms can push the patience of many, and the story starts with Keith having finished another long day and trying to figure out how he’s going to get home since his car has a flat tire and an unhealthy layer of ice on it! He is helped out by Austin, who works at the coffee shop he gets his daily coffee from, and to say thank you, Keith invites Austin to dinner with Keith and his boyfriend, Shawn.
Well, this is where it gets interesting because Austin is definitely interested in Keith, Shawn does not seem very interested in Keith except to make snarky comments about his weight, abilities or whatever else he can be critical of and seems unusually friendly with another young man, Adam. A development that Keith either does not see, or does not want to. Perhaps as a result of picking up on the tension, Austin and Keith exchange numbers before Austin heads home after the thank you dinner, with Austin hoping they can at least be friends.
Keith could definitely use a friend, especially when he’s getting ultimatums from his boyfriend and his boss, and I really liked how Austin just stepped into the role, even with his attraction to Keith. A bit more description of facial expressions in the scenes would have helped a bit more with the chemistry factor, but overall, this was a great holiday story that manages to bring some angst, fun and some seriously hot scenes (with toys) for the reader to enjoy. Another great story for the Advent series!
This was a pretty good little Christmas short, but it’s only been a few days since I read it and I was already having trouble remembering the characters.
That’s not to say that Austin and Keith weren’t good characters, because they were. Keith was nice and entirely too forgiving and trusting for his own good. He wanted to find that forever kind of love and he was holding on to a complete and total douchebag (aka Shawn) because he thought that they could have that kind of love.
Until Austin came to his rescue. Austin not only saved him from a flat, ice-encrusted tire, but also from a loveless relationship with a deadbeat cheater. We only get to see the first few days of their relationship together, but Austin already treats Keith much better than Shawn ever did.
I really liked the characters, I just felt that the plot was a little predictable and overused. Overall, it was a pretty cute story. If you have a preference for this type of plot, I would definitely recommend it. It was written well and the characters were good. It just didn’t mesh with me.
