I was not surprised by how the family’s ancestors enriched themselves on public property. Making money off of public waterways, exploiting Mother Nature, and endangering the lives of their workers to make a buck. The Northeastern version of plantation capitalism. Of course, that wasn’t the focus of the story—I digress.
Anyway, I may read some of her others.
Her mother had a cousin Hugh who disappeared from the island on her mother's 21st birthday. They searched along with Coast Guard but never his body.
They recently had a blizzard at Bushman's Harbor. Her mother asked Julia to get her mail from the post office. She had a small package for her mother & other mail. No return address, plain brown paper. When her mother opened the box it had a huge black gem stone & what appeared to be imitation diamonds on the necklace.
Julia took it to the local jeweler who said it was real. Approximately 70 carrot black diamond and the stones on the necklace were diamonds. He felt it being antique is was probably worth 2 million dollars or more.
Her Mother asks her to see if can find who sent it to her. After Julia did research of the Morrow Ice Company, knew it was called the blackwidow. Lemeule's second wife Clementine had a daughter named Marguerite Morales after she married a man from Spain.
There is so much more to this story and many characters. This is a very good book. You'll be surprised on what Julia finds out!
The story brings in Mid-coast Maine's history in the black ice trade which gives context to how the central family operates.
An interesting quick read, that warmed my heart as I read about the cold Maine winter.
