Product Description

The Icon iKeyboard 4 combines a three-octave piano keyboard with a single channel DAW controller in a rugged metal enclosure. Unlike many keyboard controllers with small plastic keys, this piano keyboard was specially designed by Icon with great attention to detail. The full sized keys are semi-weighted to provide realistic piano action. Touch strips provided for pitch bend and modulation. The iKeyboard 4 has all the controls you need right at your fingertips. The controller section features a touch fader with LED feedback to control and automate levels and other parameters, plus mute, solo, and rec buttons, with track and bank selection. A full transport is provided for playback, recording, looping, and changing automation modes. The large rotary encoder with LED ring can be used for panning, setting send levels, controlling plugin parameters, and more. The iKeyboard 4 comes bundled with Cubase LE and includes factory presets for most popular DAW’s including Cubase, Nuendo, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Amplitude and Studio One. Every control on the iKeyboard 4 can be custom-mapped to any MIDI application using the included iMap software. The iKeyboard 4 uses Mackie Control and HUI protocols for presets and automatic mapping, and can be configured for general MIDI values as well. The iKeyboard 4 has connections for expression and sustain pedals, MIDI out, USB, and power.

Amazing keyboard, perfect feel and look
I love this keyboard. The feel of the keys couldn't be better. It is somewhere between "synth feel" and "acoustic piano feel", and while it isn't the only one in this in-between space, it just feels better than any others I have tried. I love the hefty metal body (maybe not so great if you are carting it around, I suppose), and I think it just looks fantastic. And I say this as someone with a degree in industrial design. I particularly like the fact that the controls are on the left, with only a very small amount of space above the keys. I have mine in front of a big monitor (technically a 34" TV, but it is used as a monitor for my computer), and being able to have it right up against the screen is good for use with software. I'm sure some people will want different numbers of keys, and this model is available in 25, 37, 49, 61 and (supposedly) 88. Get the one that works for you, I assume this review applies to all of them. 37 seems to be the smallest that you can really use both hands with. And of course, the price should be right in front of you. It's pretty much dirt cheap for what it is.

I was looking for a good quality 3 octave midi keyboard controller. The Icon looked like it was better built than most.
When the keyboard arrived, I anxiously unpacked and connected the unit to my Moog Mother 32 synth, then plugged the synth into the amp. All connections were made, I pressed a key, and nothing. To my distress I tried everything, trouble shooting and rechecking all the connections....but no sound. I finally took a good look at the lights on the keyboard, then the synth, then I noticed the amplifier wasn't lit up.
In a nutshell, the Icon keyboard works great as long as you remember to turn on the amplifier.
Seriously, this unit feels rugged. I haven't seen anything else in this price range as well-built. I was slightly disappointed that an ac adapter wasn't included, but I had a couple compatible adapters, so no big deal. The pitch-bend ribbon is interesting with some cool looking L.E.D.s. I wanted a good quality keyboard to connect to the Moog I just bought. The aesthetics of the Icon blends nicely with my Mother 32.

I've been searching for the ideal no-frills MIDI controller that can fit into checked luggage for piano practice on the road. I believe I may have finally found it.

At just a tad under 28.5" wide, this fits perfectly into a larger suitcase. I have not traveled with it yet and will update this review after some time on the road. My previous travel solutions have included an Alesis Q25 in a smaller suitcase, and a Novation Inpulse 49 in it's own Pelican case.

The keys on the Q25 managed to fail within a few months under the stress of travel, and hauling that Novation around in a flight case is a total nightmare because of the weight, the extra piece of luggage, the cumbersome nature of the thing, and also because every single security person, desk agent and customer service representative who sees me with it stops me and I have to explain that no, it's not a damn rifle.

Anyway, back on topic. This keyboard is very solidly built... especially for the price. Compared to the 4 other MIDI controllers I own and play, this definitely has the best action. Doesn't feel anywhere even close to a real piano, nor did I expect it to. Nose to nose against my Impulse 49, I actually give the edge to this. It still feels a bit synthy and plasticy but overall it's quite nice.

There isn't a great deal of information online about this model, which is a shame because it fits a very specific niche that would make a subset of folks who want to practice piano but are stuck on business travel very happy. Apparently, ICON manufactures their own keybed for this. This keybed to my feel is superior to the Fatar on my Novation Remote SL37. It feels a little better weighted, has less synth style spring rebound, and more importantly feels a lot tighter and more solid across the board.

The case is metal! This does not feel or look like a sub $200 keyboard.

The minimal controls are exactly what I want for my purposes. If you want a lot of knobs and sliders, look elsewhere. The touch expression controls worked very well in my testing, but won't really use them, so I don't care.

This is advertised as bundled with a Cubase LE license. Mine did not come with that and came with Samplitude 11 Silver. I have not installed or demoed this software and probably won't unless I'm sitting around completely bored. Surely anyone buying this already owns multiple MIDI controllers and already has a DAW loaded up with whatever is to their preference. I personally like Cantable Solo + Pianoteq supplemented by a few other commercial and free VST's I've collected over the years.

From the minute I took it out of the box to the several hours I've spent playing it, I've been nothing but happy. I really love this little keyboard.

Works fine though has some things that I'm not thrilled about. The keys have a lot of wiggle in them and the velocity curves feel very extreme--seems to go to near full velocity very easily and difficult to get nuanced in the center of the curve. The DAW integration is nice (for Ableton Live anyways)--I ended up using the transport and basic track controls a lot more than I thought I would. I got it because I wanted a as compact a package as possible while still getting full-sized keys and on that front it's pretty good. Not my favorite controller feel-wise thought
