Ideal 4-Way CountDown Game is a fun and educational game that will challenge your addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills by simply using the numbers on the dice. The game starts by each player laying down all (10) of their wooden keys on the 4-Way CountDown unit. The first player rolls the dice in the center of the game board and the 2 numbers rolled must be converted into 1 number by using various methods explained on the instruction sheet. For example, if you roll a 3 and a 1, you could make it a 4 by adding, 2 by subtracting or 3 by multiplying or dividing. Flip up whichever number key is down. Be careful though, roll a double 6 and all of your keys go back down, or roll 11 and all of your opponent's keys go back down. The first player to flip up all 10 keys on his or her side of the playing board wins the game. Ideal's 4-Way CountDown game is designed for 2-4-players, measures 10.25-inches by 1.5-inches by 10.25-inches. Includes a wooden game board, 2 die, a sliding cover and instructions. Recommended for children 6 years of age and older.

My oldest child is in first grade and has covered basic addition and subtraction and has also been doing multiplication at home with the family. She was really excited to be able to use her math skills. My second child is 5 and has not covered any of this at home or in pre-school. We got the concept of addition across fairly easily although subtraction was a bit more of a challenge. However the pace of the game suffered a lot from this.
There is a happy medium though. There is an easy game for younger children. They can flip up the keys of the numbers rolled as long as they use both dice. Then they can use addition for the remaining keys. Each of our children can then play at a level which is manageable for themselves so all in all a great success. Neither of them are tired of it yet though like anything we use it as part of the arsenal rather than an exclusive tool.
Great for introducing basic math and numeracy (as younger children have to learn to read numbers 1-10) as well as for reinforcing what has already been learnt.
My only provison would be that the wood that the set is made from is quite a light one. I can imagine it getting broken if thee was a violent tantrum with the game as the focus of the fury!
