As a Christian counselor this book is going to be a must read for all of my clients. So many Christians today are living defeated lives, frustrated with life and deceived by the enemy. Knowing who they are in Christ is foundational to any work that can be done towards living an abundant life. Eric Geiger presents this material in a way that the reader can easily apply these truths to life and transform their spiritual journey. Every Christian should read this book - it will transform lives and churchs.

Eric Geiger has chosen an equally timely and timeless theme in "Identity", for it is out of our conscious identity and our less aware sense of self that we respond to God and all of life. His enthusiastic integration of his own "identity" shines clearly in his writing. His use of Christian scripture and the spirit of scriptural truths invite us to claim a deep sense of God's presence in the extraordinary, yet ordinary, events of our lives.

His working premise is congruent with Romans 12:1-2 ". . .be transformed by the renewal of your minds. . ." He uses foundational scriptural identity themes as the focus of the book and ties them relationally to his own life experiences. There are brief moments of confessional openness that remind us of how even sacred scripture may ring hollow until we experience God's grace and power through those who live out that specific scripture with us. Perhaps in another reflection he will more deeply "mine" this rich dimension of his faith journey.

I found myself in every chapter of this book. As a former teacher my goal was to help students determine who they were and the difference they could make. I wish I had this book then! Geiger's writings were certainly informational, but they were keenly practical and funny (found myself reading passages outloud to my family and friends). This book is powerful for everyone, perfect gift for students/graduates and a great tool for any staff or team.

Identity is a good book but could have been better. The young author does show a good understanding but failed to include three important characteristics of the New Covenant believer. Namely the fact we ARE; Holy, Righteous, and Saints. These paramount teachings of the Apostle Paul anchor the believer, enlighten sanctification, and establish the NT church. Idenity is well worth reading but should be followed up with such works as; Steve McVey's "Grace Walk" or Watchman Nee's "The Normal Christian Life."

This book is going to be used greatly by our God! The foundational truths that are addressed in this book are so often overlooked, or complicated, by us in the 'busy-ness' of daily living. I needed to be reminded that who I am is all about Him. This book is so well written and easy to read; I will definitely be sharing it with my teenagers.
I have already recommended Identity to my family, friends, church family, and co-workers - and now to you!

iDENTITY by Eric Geiger (co-author of Simple Church) was one of three books I read for a class I was teaching on our identity in Christ.

In the very first chapter Geiger points out that this book is not written from the perspective of a biblical scholar or theologian. While I agree that it is written more from a pastoral/devotional perspective with lots of illustrations, I think Geiger sells himself a little short as the book is deeper than he advertises.

The aspects of our identity in Christ covered in this book are:

You Are His Child
You Are the Priest
You Are the Bride
You Are His Servant
You Are God's Friend
You Are an Alien
You Are His Ambassador

What I really appreciated about the book was the heavy emphasis on scripture and it was used in a way that makes it easily understood. Again, although the author says he is not all that scholarly, he does do a good job explaining the cultural context of numerous passages of scripture.

One of my favorite chapters was "You Are the Bride". It was a convicting chapter, especially after his exposition of Hosea. Very powerful use of scripture to describe the relationship between God and His Church. Also the discussion on the role of confession in our relationship with God, to reestablish intimacy, was outstanding.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book:

"...we must be careful not to approach the faith as a way to act ourselves into a new identity. Instead of beginning with identity, we often begin with behavior. The order is wrong. Our identity must be the starting point. When we understand who we are, we are motivated to live the reality of who we are" (p. 13).

"View your spiritual journey as a journey with God, not toward Him.

We so badly want a title and or identity for our existence. Eric Geiger hits the nail on the head that we need only be a reflection of God and not create an identity to associate ourselves with in the world of man. My husband read this as part of his men's mentoring and suggested I read....I'm so glad I did! Excellent read.
