Editorial Reviews

The devil will find work for idle hands to do...but what happens when he chooses the laziest teen slacker in the world to do his dirty work? Anton Tobias (Devon Sawa, Wild America) is a channel-surfing, junk-food munching, couch potato burn-out who can't control the murderous impulses of his recently possessed hand. With the help of his zombiefied buddies, Mick (Seth Green, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me) and Pnub (Elden Henson, The Mighty), Anton's got to stop the rampaging devil appendage before it takes total control of his life and ruins any chance he has with class hottie Molly (Jessica Alba, Never Been Kissed). Vivica A. Fox (Independence Day) and Jack Noseworthy (The Brady Bunch Movie) co-star in this wickedly funny horror comedy.

First of all, this movie is not to be taken seriously. I saw some bad reviews and it is like some people tried too hard to get it. There is really nothing to get. It is just a good horror/comedy perfect for watching with some friends on Halloween. It is funny, gory, sexy and at many points in the film it is down right stupid but that is exactly what it is meant to be. The movie is meant to be just a Halloween laugh and I guarantee you will enjoy it if you just don't expect much to begin with. Try it....the price is right.

I fully agree with the Amazon reviewer's opinion that the movie is just an excuse to string together silly gags and gross-out gore. I'm not sure that makes it a horrible film. Hey, Dead Alive and Evil Dead, classics of the genre, are built from the same formula. They do it smarter and funnier, but Idle Hands is not without its charms.
You've got the Seth Green factor (I'd watch Spiceworld II: The wrath of Ginger if he was in it), the Dexter from Offspring getting slaughtered factor, the giant-fan-as-teen-blender factor, the Vivica Fox as martial arts demon hunting babe factor, the scantily clad Jessica Alba factor.
In other words, you've got your funny, you've got your bloody, and you've got your sexy, all in one cheesy package. If the ending wasn't so horrifically bad, I'd give this one five stars (Some DVDs have the original ending, which I haven't seen). It ain't Citizen Kane, but you know that already. If you're a fan of the genre -- B comedy-horror flicks -- this is a worthwhile entry.

For a straightedge, hardworking high school student, this is an odd movie to be considered my favorite. But I absolutely love it. I bring it to people's houses and parties all the time b/c it's a great movie that a whole bunch of people can watch and automatically like. Bringing a scary movie to a party is always bad b/c you get the people that are scared to death when someone so much as says, "Boo," and you get the people that always fold their arms, roll their eyes, and say, "That was supposed to be scary? This movie's so dumb." Comedies aren't always a hit at parties either, b/c you get people who don't understand the jokes and people who think it cramps their style to laugh at something that really is funny. Idle Hands is gory, violent, and hilarious. It's creepy w/o trying to scare the daylights out of you and falling short. It's so incredibly "out there" and weird that you can't help but laugh. Basically it's one of those movies that you can't take seriously, or you won't enjoy it. If you're one of those people that analyzes the acting and plot and all that, don't watch this. This is a movie that you watch just for laughs.

Taking the Devil's Work to new depths and spoofing teen angst and horror flicks along the way with a cast to die for!! This is a tour de force Black Comedy. Seth Green does some of his best work here ably supported by Elden Henson as the Dumb And Dumber of zombies. The much much much underrated Devon Sawa leads the cast in this typical teen possessed hand dead buddies comedy that's been done to death!! (that description is much better than you think). I don't won't to give too much away because this one's gonna blow your mind and free those brains up for gobbling in no time. Jessica Alba does a sexy turn that only nubile teens in heat and the dead can fully appreciate. This is the most fun I've had at a teen movie since all of them!!!! It's hilariously on target and played straight as an arrow. You will laugh your fool head off!! I really think we ought to check the pulses of the two writers because they couldn't possibly have come up with this without having one foot in the grave. The picture and sound tranfer are great and Blu-Ray makes this movie really pop out at you. I love letting my TV convert it to 3D and having added fun. But fun is the operative word here...you'll have tons of it...once you've gotten past the 'you're dead' thingy....

This is a guilty pleasure movie for me. Idle hands are the devil's plaything...so what happens when an idle hand gets loose? It's worth a watch if you are into something campy and fun, and if you want to see young Jessica Alba, Seth Green, and Devon Sawa.

    ***SPOILER ALERT***
It’s a shame that “Idle Hands” is such an underrated and somewhat obscure nineties title, since it still manages to be a fun horror comedy. It’s a twisted and demented horror movie about a guy’s hand that takes on a life of its own and becomes a monster by the time the movie ends. It’s filled with a lot of laughs, Devon Sawa is great, and Jessica Alba was still just that really smoking hot mystery girl that no one really knew just yet. And we were happy with her being the smoking hot mystery girl, before we realized she couldn’t act to save her life. Those were simpler times.
Devon Sawa plays Anton, a young man prone to bouts of idle hands, where his right hand takes on its own consciousness and begins possessing him in to committing horrible acts. As murders continue around his neighborhood, he begins to realize that his hand is turning him in to a serial killer. To make it worse, his two best friends played by Seth Green and Elden Henson try to help Anton and are viciously murdered by him, despite his best efforts to save them.
Oddly enough as the murders point to Anton, Anton is visited by the rotting ghosts of his best friends, both of whom begin taunting and antagonizing Anton. Deciding against heaven, they return to give Anton a hard time, and help him figure out how to stop the idle hand. Most of the dialogue from Green and Henson provides some of the most hilarious moments in “Idle Hands,” and Green is able to turn the dark comedy in to assorted moments you can quote over and over and still find humor in. Sawa portrays Anton as this gradually insane young man fighting with his idle hand, and finds a foe in himself when he severs his hand and it still refuses to go down.
