From the Inside Flap

In an elegant, two-color format, punctuated with intriguing drawings, If . . . poses hundreds of questions ranging from practical to maddening, moral to hilarious--which, if read alone, inspire self-exploration; if shared, spark fascinating discussions at gatherings, dinner parties, or meetings.

From the Back Cover

If you could spend one whole night alone with anyone in history, whom would you choose? If you could suddenly possess an extraordinary talent in one of the arts, which would you like it to be? If you could commit one crime without being caught, what crime would you commit? If your plane were about to crash and you had time to write one quick note, to whom would you write, and what would you say? If you could run any single company, institution, or organization in the world, which would you choose? These are but a few of the five hundred provocative queries from If... (Questions for the Game of Life). If... can be a wonderful after-dinner parlor game; it can serve as an icebreaker between new acquaintances; it can even help you better understand yourself, your dreams and aspirations, and the mysteries of life. After the hours of inquisitive thoughts and revelations inspired by If... (Questions for the Game of Life), you'll wonder, "If I had never picked up this book, what would have happened to me?"

Let me start off by saying that I would have given this book a 5 out of 5 if it weren't for the fact that the questions get a little repeditive. For example, you'll find questions along the lines of, "If you could have dinner with anyone in history, who would it be?" Sometime after, you might run into, "If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be?" And then just to throw you a curve, you might get asked, "If you could ask one question to anyone in history, who would it be and what would you ask?" You'll find yourself skipping questions since the answers are already known.
But now onto the good stuff. I should note that this book is only for those who are into deep conversations. If you'd rather turn on the TV and sit in silence with your friends over talking about deep and meaningful things, you won't like this book.
My first experience with this book was with one of my best friends at a three day music festival. In between acts she'd ask me a question or two, and more often than not it would lead into some convesation or story. I never thought a little book would help me learn so much about someone in such a simple manner.
Being a music fan, I often get to meet many different bands. Recently I've started buying and giving these books away to bands to help them stay entertained on the road. Besides using them for inspiration, it's a great way for people to learn more about each other.
All in all, I'd say give the book a shot. They're cheep, and if you don't like it, I'm sure you'll easily find someone to take it off your hands.

We love this book. My husband and I trade questions when we're driving in the car with the kids. The questions stretch our imaginations, and get us to talk about things other than kids, household and money! It's great, we love it. Highly recommend it.

Many of the questions in this book are incredibly disturbing. Like the one about whose pet you would kill. Or what country you would nuke. Or what family member you would like to watch you have sex. Or who you would lock up in a room and torture. What the hell is wrong with these people?

The concept is marvelous -- there are so many situations in life where some sparkling conversation starters would be most helpful. If... has some imaginative questions to get discussion flowing and I appreciate that. However, by the time I eliminate the endless variations on the same theme, the old, overused standbys (If you could have dinner with any one person in history...) and the many sexual topics(including desired lovers, simultaneous lovers, same gender lovers, who you'd like to see naked and more), I'm left with only a few questions I will actually use.

I first heard of this book in an English class in High School. Our teacher would pull it out when we had a few minutes to spare. I bought the book short while later and it is the best coffee table book in the world. It is a great conversation piece. It is wonderful for entertaining. It not only provides thought provoking conversation, but is the perfect tool for getting to know your guests on a more intimate level.

I had this book on my coffee table for months. People were always amused when they started thumbing through it. One night the guy I was dating picked it up and it sparked a great conversation that lasted until 3 in the morning.

This little book contains the kinds of questions people ask each other as icebreakers at parties. There are some interesting ones, but there is a great deal of variation around a few topics. "What famous people would you invite to dinner?" and "Who would you like to have sex with?" are recurring themes. The "if there could only be one" template also seems overused.

Here are a few of the more interesting questions:

- If you had to eliminate a single type of animal forevermore, which would you choose?
- If you were to drown in a liquid other than water, what would you want it to be?
- If you had to be homeless for one year, where would you want to be?
- If you could "uninvent" one thing in the world so that it would no longer exist, what would you choose?
- If you could "unknow" one thing you know, what would it be?
- If you could be invisible for one hour, where would you go and what would you do?
- If you were to perform in the circus, what would you do?
- If you could add one sentence to the U.S. Constitution, what would it say?
- If you could recover one thing you've lost in your lifetime, what would you wish to find?
- If you were asked what to put in a new breakfast cereal box as a gimmick, what would you pick?
- If you could arrange for any two singers to record a duet together, which two would you pick, and what song would you have them sing?

Maybe a good way to use this book is to check it out of the library, hunt through it for the short list of questions that work for you, and return it. Just a thought. There are several additional books in this series with questions. Perhaps the authors have followed a different strategy in these volumes that produces greater thematic variety.

This is such a fun book! It's especially great for group bonding--I have fond memories of spending a whole day by the lake with a group of fellow students and answering questions from this book. It's a great conversation starter and a good way to get to know people, especially people you hardly know. I recommend it for college students (it's great for meeting your new floor- or suite-mates), party hosts, team-building activity coordinators, and anyone else who needs an easy way to start discussions and get to know people.
