With his father being Glyn Johns, producer for the likes of The Who, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, and The Faces, it should come as no surprise to find Ethan’s hand behind contemporary artists ranging from The Kings Of Leon, Ray LaMontage, Ryan Adams, Laura Marling, to Joe Cocker, and an endless list of others. But here on If Not Now The When?, Ethan steps from behind his overcrowded desk, laying out an array of clean brightly upbeat, yet weathered acoustic bluesy-rock Americana sounding songs, that while numbering a mere ten on this solo outing, drift in and out of an equal number of musical genres, creating a free-flowing format that’s taken inspirations from Nick Cave, Tom Petty, Nick Drake, Chuck Prophet, and certainly Simon & Garfunkel.

The album’s not lazy or offhanded, it’s pointed, haunting, thoughtful, reflective, moving, and almost embarrassingly beautiful. Ethan’s playing is flawless, his slide guitar is intriguing and understated, yet commanding, without being overbearing and demanding of attention. This is one of those albums that just begs to be handled, played on the turntable, flipped, considered, and played again.

I really like this folk genre with tinges of blues and rock. I did preview the music before purchase. Therefore, it comes as a surprise that this seems so average. When a singer does original material, both the songs sung and the singer's voice are the focus. Here, both are adequate. Ethan's voice is not overly expressive, kind of a deadpan delivery devoid of much emotion. The majority of the songs, while lyrically interesting, show little melodic inventiveness. It's very basic going up on the end of one line & then down on the next. The only track that has jumped out of me after three spins is "Eden," a mid-tempo track with Johns sounding depressed but trying hard to be hopeful, "We face our time; I've seen the gates of Eden still standing, hinges rusting holding no doors." The art in the CD booklet is quite interesting. For those into quiet music, this might click. I haven't been able to find a way in. Enjoy!

Surprised I didn't like this one more. Just can't find reasons to return to this one after a single play. Too bad considering all the good reviews.
