This is a feel good, frenemies-to-lovers New Adult, coming-out, cross-country-drive romance. Whew! I think I got it all...

Charlie and Gavin were best friends the summer before high school began. On Labor Day weekend they shared one hot kiss--the first for either of them--and the next day it was over. Gavin was dating Candace, cheer captain and otherwise It Girl. Gavin never acknowledged Charlie again, excepting that fateful day in the pizza shop.

Fast forward four years. It's Christmas break and Charlie is desperate to return to Connecticut to spend Christmas with his family, especially his 8 y/o sister Ava. She had spent the last two Christmases in hospitals suffering the complications of leukemia, but she's in remission (great story there!) and anxious to see her big brother. Unfortunately, the East Coast had been hit by Snowmageddon and San Fran's airport is in it's second day of grounding due to Fog-mageddon. There are no flights out, the busses are overbooked, and Charlie's desperate. His last-ditch effort is to rent a car and drive the 43 hours, but yeah, no cars.

Well, there is ONE car. It's been rented, but the driver hasn't left yet. And, it turns out, the driver is going the exact same way Charlie would be--because it's Gavin and they live on the same street in Conn. There's a whole lot of tension in that tiny Jetta!

In the four day drive, they experience the traditional Airing of Grievances, oh wait that's a Festivus ritual. Well, anywho, Gavin and Charlie slowly reveal their fears and issues. There's mishaps and mayhem and matching sweaters and pancakes with fake maple syrup. And love. Because Charlie never forgot Gavin, and Gavin always remembered Charlie, no matter how deep he buried him in his closeted consciousness.

I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review via IndiGo Marketing and Design...

Charlie, away at school wanted to make it home in time to be with his family for the Holidays, namely, his little sister who was just in remission from leukemia. You can tell right off he's super close to her, being the one who donated the marrow that helped save her. She was pretty crazy about him too, it was ridiculously cute.
Unfortunately, because of a winter storm there and the rain and fog where he was, it made it impossible to get a flight home, all the planes were grounded til it clearned up. He was devistated, thinking that if somehow he didn't make it home, his little sister would get sick again. Irrational maybe but, dealing with sick family is hard and being scared for them and worrying about them sometimes makes ya a little crazy....

Gavin moved in down the street from Charlie 4 years prior and they became fast friends, but Gav, not wanting to admit he was gay and his dad telling him he was just confused he pushed it and Charlie away. They both done and said some things they regretted but they didn't speak again after that..I hated that so much for him. That happens so often, parents not being supportive or just confusing a kid more because they don't understand it. It made the story that much more real to me though.
Gavin also went to school across the country, not at the same school but the same state as Charlie, he too was trying to get home and rented the very last car the rental place had.

This was a great story. I have to say that I'm so glad I picked up my first book by Keira Andrews ([book:Kick at the Darkness|25543022]) because I just love her writing. The characters are believable and likable and the stories are realistic and well written.

Charlie is a college student in San Francisco. Charlie is gay and has been out for years and his family accepts him. He grew up in Connecticut with his parents and little sister, Ava, who he loves very much. Ava had leukemia and Charlie donated bone marrow to help save her. Ava is in remission now but Charlie promised to be home for Christmas and is determined to keep his word.

Gavin is a college student in San Francisco (different college from Charlie). Gavin and his family moved to Connecticut when he was 14. Gavin is gay but has lived a lie for years because his father gave him the indication it wasn't alright and that he wouldn't love Gavin if he was gay. Gavin had a girlfriend in his high school years but they broke up before college when he couldn't keep lying to himself about his sexual inclinations anymore.

Gavin and Charlie lived 10 houses down from each other and were actually best friends for the first few months. Unfortunately, issues arose (having to do with attraction and what Gavin's father did to him) which broke up their friendship and had them as odds for their high school years. Both Gavin and Charlie heard that the other was going to college in San Francisco but they didn't get it touch while they were both there.

When the story begins, Charlie is trying to get home but his flight has been cancelled because of massive storms. He finds that all transport is booked and he gets to the last car rental place just after they've rented the last car.
