Ignaz Moscheles: Music for Flute & Piano
Pianist, composer and conductor Ignaz Moscheles was one of the most respected musicians of his time, and throughout his long life was at the social and musical heart of Europe. Studies with Beethovens old teachers, Albrechtsberger and Salieri, equipped him with a first-class compositional technique used to notable effect in a series of works for his own instrument, the piano. Moscheles also wrote a delightful corpus of works for flute and piano, seldom heard today, yet full of vivacious tunes, contrapuntal interest, and some technically demanding passages which reflect his own status as a virtuoso pianist.

Moscheles music for the most part may be found in the early days of romanticism. These works for flute and piano are extremely lyrical, subtle, and at times require some virtuosity for the performer. the two sonatas listed are noteworthy for their charm, harmonies, themes, and tonal color. The Six Variations are a charming and noteworthy tonal interest. The performances are full of subtle tonal colors, variety, fine expression, nuance and a total understanding for the art of the musical phrase. Again, the accompanist understands balance, nuance and phrase which adds much to the overall success of this superb flute and piano combination. Again, fine program notes are available here.
