Ignazio Albertini is first heard of in a letter by Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, one of the most distinguished violinists of the seventeenth century and a leading figure of the imperial Hofkapelle in Vienna. We learn from the same letter that Albertini moved within an interesting circle of musicians, including those elite group of musicians attached to the imperial court. His contacts all point to to exceptional qualities as an instrumentalist, a fact supported by the excellence of his sonatas.
