"The author has developed a nice balance between reality and fantasy with this story line. The characters are well written and they each show their own strengths as well as insecurities, making them more three dimensional. I would recommend it to a wide range of readers."--Online Book Club

Our hero is a young lady by the name of Phoenyx. She is no ordinary 19 year old, but has a special gift. That gift is when she touches a person she is able to, through the tremendous power of suggestion, bend that touched person's will to embrace the will of Phoenyx.
Ultimately, she along with one other young lady and two young men are abducted and thrown into side by side jail cells. As strangers they begin their horrible jailed adventure learning about each other while searching for a common denominator that binds them all together both physically and in the deep recesses of their soul.
Eventually strangers become united as they work together and find that perhaps they are not strangers after all.
Caloric by Tricia Barr is an exciting novel that will keep the reader entertained and reflecting on the value of friendship, the importance of working through guilt that is misplaced, discovering personal gifts and the power of many becoming one.
I am not usually into books about people younger than I am i.e teenagers or in anyway in high school BUT this story follows four 19 year olds who's souls are attached to the four elements which is a story line I am into. In a very depressing setting the author manages to add lightness and humor that normal teenagers would have which brings a smile to the readers face as things where bleak and could have been a lot harder to read.
From the first second the two meant for each other its pretty obvious but the way they get there is still charming and something I'll wager most people dreamed about in high school.
You want to judge and say, thats not how someone would handle captivity but thats the beauty of having four characters that feed off each other. Each dealt with the situation in different un healthy ways, panic, denial ect but because they are a team they are able to draw strength from one another and survive.
This book was offered to me free in exchange for a review but since it was up my ally I downloaded it myself direct and was not disappointed!
The protagonist, who goes by Pheonyx, is a great strong woman character. Her fellow inmates, Lily, Sebastian, and Skyler make the story what it is. It reminds me of many great teenage groups that emphasize friendship (Harry Potter, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bullers Day off). I love YA books that emphasize this for teenagers. When you are a teen, your friends are your world and any book that can show what real friendship looks like is great in my book!
There is a lot of character development, which I enjoy. It give the book more depth, rather than just another superhero, good guys vs bad guys, novel. You can relate to the characters on some level and watch them evolve throughout the story as they face the adventure together.
