The future seemed bright and education was now at the Johnson family's finger tips. Finally they could learn what it means to give and receive love. Those days of having no food, no clothes and no money is about to come to an end now they're in the land of opportunity. Best of all the physical and emotional abuse they had come to believe was the norm is about to be a distant memory or is it?
"Ignorant Souls" is the story of Buck Johnson who strives to give his family the best and make sure they embrace Christianity, and live as upstanding citizens. But Buck has a hard time letting go of the mental chains that still bind him to the old ways of the past. Uneducated, suppressed communication skills, and damn right ignorant is how we see Buck. Problem is...it's a different time now and as well as his wife Esther, Buck has two daughters and a son who want to be treated with love and respect while being nurtured into the world. But things will not be easy for this family, not by a long shot!
"Ignorant Souls is the prequel to "Neglected Souls" with "Neglected No More" being the last book in this trilogy. Author Richard Jeanty successfully shines the spotlight on one family, and how ignorance can grab hold of someone's soul and fester for many years while pride gets in the way of help!

Star Rating 4.5****
Buck Johnson literally came from nothing and strives to make a better life for his family. Buck marries a girl that seemed to be raised in a good Christian household. Little does he know that his wife has been keeping a horrible secret, and little does either one of them know that her parents have been keeping a secret themselves. Love does not seem to live at the Johnson residence. Buck has a hard time expressing how he feels and gives little to no affection to his children or his wife. Although the Johnson family attends church often, they do not take the time to communicate with each other or their children. Buck and his wife tend to feel that ignorance is bliss.
Ignorant Souls by Richard Jeanty was a fast read. I was able to read this book within a few hours. The story holds your attention from the first page. Ignorant Souls is a story of mental and physical abuse and a family that tries to break the chains of the past. Unfortunately, I felt the story was a little too cut and dry. Mr. Jeanty made a point of mentioning a few of the other siblings and I would have really enjoyed reading more about them as well. Rest assured...if you have not read Neglected Souls or Neglected No More, Ignorant Souls is a story within itself. It is the prequel to Neglected Souls.
Mr. Jeanty brings a fresh perspective to dysfunctional with the dynamics surrounding the Johnson family. Specifically how emancipation freed the Johnson family physically but on many levels left them mentally enslaved. This mental anguish along with financial hardships affected the family structure and the ability of its members to maintain loving households. Although Katrina didn't suffer physical abuse the emotional turmoil she withstood due to her father's ignorance and her mother's guilt were just as destructive to her young psyche.
When added to the circumstances surrounding Katrina's pregnancy readers will finally understand the resentment Katrina harbored towards her offspring. Although Katrina's actions are still inexcusable Mr. Jeanty manages to make them understandable all while laying down the foundation for a very memorable series.
This series is my most favorite of Jeantys' - He puts out this series seperately wanting the reader to want for more. I was first introduced to this series with "Neglected Souls" thinking this was indeed the first part. "Neglected No More" was then followed with me saying what an ending and now "Ignorant Souls" (the Prequel)revealing the beginning of it all.
I was very much happy with the way the story was written. The sequence of events were well sought; The plot was creative and belivable; A Great Read!
