Richmond Lattimore (1906–1984) was a poet, translator, and longtime professor of Greek at Bryn Mawr College. Richard Martin is the Antony and Isabelle Raubitschek Professor in Classics at Stanford University.

For any serious scholar of Homer, and due to the less than lyrical nature of the Greek of the Iliad, the Latimore translation of is really the only one that comes close to capturing the true essence of said poem in English. Fitzgerald is in the same class as Lattimore with his translation of The Odyssey, but that is because the original Greek is much more rhythmic and poetic than that of The Iliad. In fact, over the last couple of centuries there have been more than a few who have questioned whether the author of the Iliad and that of the Odyssey are one and the same.
