Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Praise for Peter Green’s translation of The Odyssey:

"Green brings to the poem the rhetorical directness and historical expertise which worked so well in his translation of The Iliad. Speeches in his version are vigorous and direct."—London Review of Books

"An amazingly accessible translation for experienced or novice readers, a translation that conveys both the feeling and the sense of the original lyrical Greek. . . .  eminently suitable for classroom use."—Choice

"Comparisons to [Emily] Wilson's recent translation are inevitable. . . . Both Wilson and Green capture the spirit of the Odyssey, but word-for-word, Green also captures a feel for the Homeric language, an experience closer to the original."—Library Journal

"Green's intelligent translation is . . . a superb choice."—The Weekly Standard

Praise for Peter Green’s translation of The Iliad:

“Taken as a whole, this is the best line-for-line translation of the poem I know.”—London Review of Books

“Peter Green’s particular merit lies in achieving a clarity and fluidity that carries the reader forward. A notable achievement.”—Times Literary Supplement

“[Green] gets the interpretation right without interrupting the forward motion that is always Homer’s aim—and this is one of the great virtues of Green’s translation as a whole: its limber fluency.”—New York Review of Books

Homer was probably born around 725BC on the Coast of Asia Minor, now the coast of Turkey, but then really a part of Greece. Homer was the first Greek writer whose work survives.

He was one of a long line of bards, or poets, who worked in the oral tradition. Homer and other bards of the time could recite, or chant, long epic poems. Both works attributed to Homer - The Iliad and The Odyssey - are over ten thousand lines long in the original. Homer must have had an amazing memory but was helped by the formulaic poetry style of the time.

In The Iliad Homer sang of death and glory, of a few days in the struggle between the Greeks and the Trojans. Mortal men played out their fate under the gaze of the gods. The Odyssey is the original collection of tall traveller's tales. Odysseus, on his way home from the Trojan War, encounters all kinds of marvels from one-eyed giants to witches and beautiful temptresses. His adventures are many and memorable before he gets back to Ithaca and his faithful wife Penelope.

We can never be certain that both these stories belonged to Homer. In fact 'Homer' may not be a real name but a kind of nickname meaning perhaps 'the hostage' or 'the blind one'. Whatever the truth of their origin, the two stories, developed around three thousand years ago, may well still be read in three thousand years' time.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you care about the look of this edition
Reviewed in Canada on June 16, 2020
I am someone who shop for beautiful, collector or deluxe edition. When I shopped this item I thought there wasn't enough pictures and reviews about the look of the book. In my opinion, when it's hardcover and more expensive editions it would be better to have more comments or more descriptions of the look of the book(s). So here are the pictures that I would have like to have when I was shopping for the «deluxe» edition of those classics of Homer. I was really curious about the writing style and arrangement of the text. I didn't want to take a too clear photo of the text to not be accused of anything so sorry for the bad quality, but at least you can see the form of the police and typeface, it's always a big worry when I shop online but, for this one, even thought the typeface is small, it seems nice to read. The pages consistency is fun (thick but not too much and the texture of the paper is nice to touch), also I think for those who like to take notes in their book or highlight nice passages it's a good paper to do it.
