I've always kind of liked the Decemberists. I have had "The King Is Dead" on CD since it came out, and I like their sound.
I heard "Severed" on XM Radio and was completely blown away, very first listen. I ordered "I'll Be Your Girl" on CD and have to say it is the first full-length album, beginning to end, that I truly love all of in longer than I'd hoped.
This album has the Decemberist elements that I liked previously... Colin Meloy's unique voice and singing style, the acoustic and percussion elements, the quirky song elements. On top of that, they have added some really good, well-placed synthesizers that take the whole thing to another dimension that I love. And then there is the lyrical content. A lot of it is dark. The very first time I listened to "Cutting Stone," I had goosebumps and a strong reaction that I haven't had in years and only really remember with masterpiece rock art like Pink Floyd, Rush, and Queensryche at their very best. But this isn't really like them. Hard to describe with words.
I love the whole album. It's 100% Decemberists, but it brings in elements sonically and lyrically that I love. Just love.
