Illicit is the fourth book in the Sin City Outlaws Series from M.N. Forgy. All of the characters have been in the previous book so for a better reader experience I suggest you read them all before Illicit for the back stories.
Machete is a member of the Sin City Outlaws and is not capable of human compassion. Or so people tell him. Raven is a club prisoner and Machete has been ordered to break her. This is not going to be a simple task as Raven has had a past so deeply ingrained in pain that pain does nothing to break her. She is like sharing company with the demon Lilith herself to Machete. She is his perfect toy who is filled with dark rage, perfect beauty, and sinfully sweet. Everything about her brings out the demons in Machete. He wants her scream and her big dark eyes looking up at him. He wants her to beg him for mercy. He wants to be her heaven or hell. Machete's desire for Raven is forbidden. His infatuation is illicit and he is betraying his club. If the wage of sin is death, then Raven is going to get him killed.
Oh my goodness this book is dark, twisted and just down right good. I loved every single second of it. Welcome to Raven and Machete's story. You better buckle up because it is one heck of a ride. From the second Machete sees Raven he knows he wants her. He also knows that she is just as broken as her and is also the only one who can lead his club to Cross. The club is in serious danger and they have no choice but to make deals they don't want to make with people they do not want to make them with. Raven though finds herself a prisoner of the Sin City Outlaws and needs to pay for kidnapping a members wife but most of all they want the intel that only she has. Machete is tasked with breaking her. He is use to breaking people and has many tools with which to inflict some serious pain and eventually death. He feeds off of it and is really good at what he does. What he doesn't realize is that Raven has had such a horrible inconceivable life since she was a child that pain has the opposite affect on her. To make matters worse Machete for the first time in years has a yearning he thought he would never feel again for anyone. I am so afraid I am going to give something away. Just be prepared for one heck of a ride and some seriously disturbing back stories as I can not even imagine in my darkest dreams what these two characters have been through. This though makes them perfect for each other. Add in that there is no way they can be together and you have one heck of a story.
I love stories that are one the darker side. So much so I question my own sanity at times. M. N. Forgy always writes amazing can not put down stories but I think Machete and Raven's is my favorite out of the series. Grab your favorite beverage and dive in. Your not going to want to move from your reading spot until you have read the last words of this book.
This is not my first Sin City book but I did miss the one before this one. This one could be read as a standalone but I did feel like I was missing some of the other character's back story. Missing what happened before does not hurt your understanding of these two characters though because all of their issues and darkness and craziness is all there for your reading enjoyment.
Raven was given a task and she failed. Now she has become the task and Machete is going to break her, or is he. Raven is a tough cookie; she isn't scared by pain, she doesn't all of a sudden become compliant when threatened with death and she certainly isn't scared of a little blood. She is hard core, but what else is expected when you have a history like hers.
Machete is just a crazy as Raven is, maybe a little more unstable if that is possible...nah, maybe not but definitely close. He lives in the darkness of his soul because he likes it there. He likes to inflict pain, he likes to make others scream and he cares for no one save his brotherhood. He had a taste of what he thought was love once and he refuses to go there again.
This book wasn't quite as scorching as some of the others I have read by this author. Don't get me wrong, when the heat is turned on it's turned all the way up, but there was a lot of gritty story to be told. The club is looking for someone and they think Raven has the information. Raven is unlike any captive that came before her so Machete spends a long time seeing what makes her tick and scream and cry. I devoured this in a day, always waiting to see what was going to happen. Were they going to find their guy, was Raven going to survive her time with the club, was Machete going to throw her off the deep-end, was he going to lose sight of the end game in the process...so many variables that kept me glued to this book and now I want the next one...cause Mac.
She's now the captive of the club. Machete is her tormentor. His methods of “persuasion” are effective and often bloody. She attacked one of their women and knows about Cross. Machete lets no women get to him. He did that once. She cheated and the out come changed him forever. But Raven gets to him in ways he cannot control.
She learned her lessons well, still, she too reacts to Machet. How will they survive the forced time together?
This is not for the faint of heart. Its characters are complex, have backgrounds that have more than ruined many, need something or someone to hold on to. For him, he's found the club and the members who are his brothers. Can Raven's pull and what he learns about her make him jeopardize his place with his club, his family?
As their relationship progresses, Raven will have to make a choice, Machete and the man who made her into the woman she is. The ending is a surprise and no spoilers here to ruin it.
For me, the darkness, in the beginning, was almost too much. However, I had to watch the progression of these two lost souls. I needed to know if there was a future for them or if their attempt to find one would cost their place in the world.
