Each chapter in the course introduces one of the novels being studied with a thought-provoking "Before You Read the Book" section, and then moves into a very handy "Suggested Reading and Homework Plan" that we found to be eminently doable. This saved me from having to plan out exactly how to proceed though the course and I was very grateful to have that bit of work already done for me. Each chapter also includes a wealth of fascinating information on the author and the context surrounding the novel, and covers one or more relevant aspects of literary study in a way that was both conversational and scholarly. Speaking of conversations, each chapter includes insightful questions and discussion prompts for students and teachers. The chapters conclude with a list of various follow-up activities for the students to choose from that are really well designed.
As a busy teaching parent I appreciated how simply the course folded itself into the fabric of our homeschool days. Instead of feeling that we were adding one more thing to our already full schedule, we were drawn to these authors and their life stories. We got to know them a little, and we were captivated with the ways that - for good or ill - their own story led to the novels for which they are now famous.
Sharon Watson's course is a gem that I am happy to recommend.
