~ Judi E. Easley for Blue Cat Review
Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. I don't know who said that, but they were right. And in this series you see it happen over and over again. Ms. Boyce has done a wonderful job of showing it time and time again. In so many of the characters, the power has done terrible things to them. Destroyed them. Even the best of them have had to battle against the pull of the power. Look at what Braedon has gone through to overcome the pull of his power just while he is a prince. Imagine what being a Blood will be like for him. And for Kara with her grandfather's legacy awoken, she has to wear the wrist guard just to keep it in check. Even then she is incredibly powerful. If she weren't also incredibly good, she could be as awful as some of the monsters in Ourea.
We've come down to the last book. The days before the big battle. Braedon and Kara are desperate for some time alone. They want to cement their relationship before events can possibly tear them apart. Things never go quite the same when you mix a human into yakona rites. But Kara has something that's uniquely their own that will make up for it.
The allies know they have a traitor, but they've been so busy they have sort of forgotten about that as they draw near to battle time. Now, as they march off to meet the enemy it occurs to Braedon, who is it and how will they interfere? Well, of course, they find out in a big way.
Each Blood has been assigned one of Kara's people for communications. All the armies are in place. Timing has been worked out for each to move. One by one the armies make their moves until the traitor makes a move that brings chaos to coordination. Can Kara, Braedon, and their forces counter the traitor's move? Will Braedon face his father and fight? And what comes after the war? Will there be peace? Who will be in charge?

This completes my requirement for the COYER Can You Read A Series In A Month Challenge June 2017
Being the final book in this series, it ended well with all but one plot line answered. For me, not knowing how Evelyn had changed left me wondering. I think the book should have, at least covered the 3rd annual gala.
It was full of action, betrayal and overcoming obstacles. It was written well and flowed effortlessly through the whole book. Whilst it was still less than 300 pages, there was a lot of information in it to wrap up most all questions. It also didn't feel like I was being rushed through this final book. I feel like there could be a spin-off series.
Overall, well worth the time to read to complete the series.
I would most definitely recommend this series to anyone who loves a great story!
first I must warn if you have not read the previous three books in this series a) you seriously should and b) you need them to understand this one. There are nuances and all of them are tied and a continuation of the next.
Saying that this is a bloody brilliant book. We pick up where the last left off but now we feel the gravity more of what is going on. The bloods and Braedon are about to go to war. Braedon against his own people. The others to gain peace. Each blood with their own thoughts, struggles and troubles. Gavin has been through the ringer- the woman he loves isn't who he thought she was, him and Braedon are tenuous and he misses his parents. Aurora is feeling like she is less because she can't go into battle. Frine is just wary of the outcome and Evelyn is a petulant child who is like a two year who doesn't get her way. Lets add Garret the dwenowith who is loathed by Evelyn but a unusual muse and Kara who is to be bonded to Braedon but has guilt for her past actions, the vagabond in her wanting peace and feeling leary towards Evelyn. Her and Braedon know something is off with her but can't put their finger on what. Braedon is fighting the inner battle of wanting to protect his world Kara, protect his people but guilt because he is about to battle his people and fear of seeing his father again. He also feels elated over being with Kara.
Now lets add the outside forces- the isen who Deidre (evil evil women) is trying to get to fight for her, the vagabonds and their freedom that others don't like, the war that looms over everyone, Stone who is just Stone no other way to say it, Carden who is Braedon's father and his pull one Braedon, the betrayal, trying to create peace and trying to get forgiveness for things.
This is a the ultimate feast in endings. SM Boyce keeps you captivated and wondering what is next. All the while you have the love story of Braedon and Kara playing out and their worries of losing each other in battle. There is constant tension that keeps you on edge and watching everything play out is fascinating. The character that has grown is Gavin. You see him go from selfish to a almost humble and gracious man. He becomes a leader and king one who cares for his people and home. Each character is a strong force within the story and helps bring home what is going on and what the ultimate goal is-peace. They propel the story forward and keep it from feeling stunted.
Braedon is one that will have you aww and swoon. His loyalty and love for Kara is beyond what one would imagine. He is flawed and also sweet. A fierce fighter and soldier but a caring man towards people and looks at the consequences of things as well. He knows he must wage battle against his people and feels the guilt of this tug at him. He keeps the story alive and from going one dimensional as we watch him plan the battle, take the courage to go after his dad, protect kara and support her when she needs it and propel forth the desire for peace.
Kara is a kind girl but full of guilt. She is torn with who she is and what she has done. She is also a good strategist when it comes to getting the isen to help, getting the gestures to show peace is desired and her vagabonds and what is best for them. Her and Braedon are perfect together.
Each character is important in their own way and carry forth the story as we head into battle, fight and gain the objectives that they set out for themselves. We see evil in its truest cruelest form in Deidre. That woman will have you snarl and growl.
The story never stalls and keeps propelling itself to the ultimate end and battle. A well written captivating end to a amazing series and love story placed strategically in the battle for peace. I hope we see more of these characters in future books.
