About the Author
Jamie A. Hope is an author, teacher, and national contributor. She was also the former chief of staff for a Michigan legislator and ensign with the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. She writes everything from politics (which she feels is a lot like writing fiction these days) and spirituality to fiction/faction and everything in-between. Her insatiable fascination, however, is delving into the obscure happenings of this world, because sometime truth really is stranger than fiction. When Jamie isn’t in the deep recesses of her mind or trying to dig into others, she is hanging in the real world with her husband and children—quading, engaging in outdoor survival activities—and with winter seemingly the dominant season where she lives—indoor survival. Salem Stone, a popular, good looking high school student and star athlete, living in the upper peninsula of Michigan with his family, begins to experience supernatural happenings...some of them demonic and some of them angelic. He also begins to discover a physical strength and power that is beyond human. As he is trying to understand if these experiences are real and what they mean, he begins to develop a romantic relationship with the mysterious Lily, the new girl at school, while still having a place in his heart for Sarah, his long time childhood love. Conflict arises between Salem and Sarah as well as his parents and close friends, because of Lily who encourages Salem to live for himself and himself only, Salem finds his loyalty to his family, friends and faith in his God compromised.
As Salem begins to uncover answers as to why these experiences are occurring from family secrets deep in the past, his family and friends safety is jeopardized. With the superhuman powers that Salem is physically developing, he now has the choice to use them for his own selfish desires or surrender them to the Creator and His purposes.
Enlightening, exciting and at entertaining. It also has a fear factor that will make the hair on your arms stand up but isn't brutal or horrific. Twists and turns on each page keep you guessing and the ending made me eager for the sequel! The author is very descriptive and detailed in her writing and I could imagine each scene play out in my mind. As I stated earlier, the book includes themes of romance, science fiction and and gives you insight to the real world of the supernatural. What we see with our physical eyes is only temporal and the real world must be seen through spiritual eyes.
Will definitely be recommending this book not only to young adults but to my 30/40/50 year old friends as well. Even though this book has some scary parts I would even recommend it for some tweens as well.
Illusion had so many things I love. Demons, religious elements, and a fun action packed story.
I appreciate how the author brought history into the story and Illusion has well developed characters. Salem was very likable and I enjoyed watching him change and who doesn't love a good love triangle. Actually all of the characters are great. It's the recipe for a perfect story.
I did have a few issues. The beginning didn't grab me, I would have put it down if I weren't reviewing but it gets better, much better. The book also borderlined on preachy, like I said above I Love religion in books but it's not what you say but how you say it. If you are Christian this most likely won't bother you at all. There were a few editing issues but the STORY is a great one and I do recommend for those 13+ who love a good fast paced read.
I must admit that at first the number of characters was a bit overwhelming, however, the author develops each character so well that as a reader I soon realized how essential each and every one was to the story. Additionally, Jamie Hope uses biblical and historical references to advance the story and to build to a thrilling conclusion. A remarkable read for YA and Adults.
