But "The Illusion of Separation" combs through from the roots of western philosophy, through the explosion of scientific discoveries confirming the benefits of mindfulness and the insight of ancient wisdom traditions, to ultimately discuss how we can and we must address the root cause of our current crisis, our habitual way of thinking.
Modern man has systematically assumed himself to be isolated from nature. This assumption has not only led us to mistreat our maternal earth, but also to distance ourselves from our own amazing wisdom, humor, and elegance.
Mr. Hutchins' compelling conclusion is that our future begins and ends with more holistic ways of thinking.
"Yesterday's logic is based on the objective exclusivity of rationalism and egotism." "It is this very logic that is at the heart of all our crisis..." "If we have any hope of rectifying the error of our ways, this logic needs to be put right at its root..."
I found the book to be an education and a manifesto for a rich intuitive way of life that is the solution to our current crisis, and our birthright.
While in the UK recent I was fortunate to attend the book launch of Giles 2nd book - The Illusion of Separation. In his new book Giles powerfully argues that the root cause of our current interconnected crises ("The Global Problematique", Ozbekhan, 1970 -http://quergeist.net/Problematique_Club-of-Rome.htm) is our systemic belief that individually and collectively we humans are an other from, with and to the rest of the world.
Giles mounts a three pronged attack on this belief.
First a powerful review of historical evidence - which shows that once we humans had quite the opposite understanding - that we were of, in, and an integral part of the world.
Second he reviews some of the latest physical, chemical, biological, ecological, physiological and sociological research which provides evidence that our earlier understanding was valid and our current understandings (which powerfully emerged during the enlightenment) is at best unhelpful if we wish to create a world in which the possibility for flourishing exists for ourselves and all life.
Last, and perhaps most controversially, Giles also explores what various systems of belief have had to say about our integration with or separation from the world.
All in all I found this powerfully argued and a contribution to the some of the deep context needed for the design of flourishing organizations.
