Editorial Reviews

Review

Selection, Best Reference Books of 2021... Detailed illustrations, vivid colors, and magnified views dominate the pages of science and research fellow Vayttaden and medical doctor Gustafson's dynamic guide to the human body. Chapters organized by system drill down into subtopics (smooth muscles, facial muscles) and conclude with notes on major disorders and injury. Medical graphics by SciePro, boxed text, and diagrams aid in understanding occasionally complex body function explanations. ― Library Journal Published On: 2022-03-01

The writing is succinct and occasionally complex, supported by an abundance of 3D renderings, charts, cross-sections, low-magnification micrographs, illustrations, and photographs, the majority of which come from the medical illustration company SciePro. Boxed sidebars (on, for instance, the anatomy of a taste bud) and graphics (an image depicting an aneurysm) address niche topics and add clarity. Readers will be aided by the book's thoughtful page layouts, font choices, and use of color; the glossary and index add to usefulness. Curious readers can find answers to specific inquiries or browse an overview of the lymphatic system, brain structure, or information on allergic response. A fascinating, attractive, and valuable addition to any library. -- Maggie Knapp ―

Poor Packaging Causing Corner & Binding Damage
Beautiful book and looks to be what I expected, but it is heavy & was put in a box where it could slide around and bang the edges of every corner. Damage to every corner of the book, including the binding. A book of this weight requires bubble wrap or newspaper stuffed in the box to protect it. Returning it and Amazon is shipping a new one. Crossing my fingers that this next one is packaged better. I’ll try and update2/18 Update: I received the new copy and once again it was poor packing and there was some damage to the corners and binding but not as bad as the last time. There was one piece of paper put around the book but not in a way that would protect anything, especially the corners. The book is too heavy to put in a loose box to bang around. It needs crumpled paper all around the book to keep it from moving or ideally, bubble wrap. It is barely acceptable so I will keep it because I doubt the next one would get any better. I posted a video showing the second delivery. The 3 stars is a combination of the book and the damage due to poor packaging. The book and its material is a 4 or 5 stars. I wish there was a way to separate the two. Disappointing
