Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Veteran UK cookbook author and caterer Blashford-Snell (Diva Cooking, One Year at Books for Cooks) shares over a thousand recipes in this colossal "category-killer" dedicated to everyday food. Given the full-color, highly-informative DK treatment, each recipe is accompanied by a photo of the finished dish as well as at-a-glance information boxes with serving yields and approximate times. Those intimidated by the kitchen will find help in clear but detailed steps and straightforward, illustrated instructions for techniques like cutting up a whole chicken, prepping artichokes and making sauces. Blashford-Snell's catering experience is on display in the book's imaginative appetizer and "party bites" section; Wild Mushroom Tartlets, Chicken Liver Pate, Herbed Shrimp and Goat Cheese Wraps and multiple riffs on Croustades, a bite-sized bread cup filled with various savory creations, are easy to prepare and surefire hits. Every food group and cuisine is represented-from bread-making to burger-grilling to pad thai to Chocolate Bavarian Creams-and it's rounded out with tips on making grilled sandwiches and omelets, "cooking for a crowd" and working with leftovers, making it a fine choice for a first cookbook. Once they're comfortable, cooks should be tempted from their comfort zone with tasty variations, making this a go-to staple and a volume to grow with.

I bought this book on Saturday and have spent no less than 5 hours devouring it. I am a visual when it comes to cookbooks and the fact that EVERY single recipe had a picture was almost enough to sell me on this book. It's really heavy but since I don't plan to cart it around daily that should be ok. I love the picture gallery of what's coming up in each section. It makes it really easy to scan, find something that looks good, and then head to that page so you don't always have to flip through the entire book. One of my favorite features is the Techniques section in the back. It's not one of those cookbooks where you will really never make anything. If you love to cook and are willing to experiment this is a keeper!

I love the wide variety of recipes in this book and most importantly the sections on food preparation techniques. The only downside is after making about 6-7 recipes from this book I've noticed some bland recipes and a few small printing errors. For example, the german apple cake didn't call for baking powder but in step 3 it states, "Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt." The cake was also too salty. Because I'm still learning to cook I still recommend it because the instructions, illustrations, and new recipes were really helpful for a beginner.

This is a great cookbook that has all types of foods. It also has a section in the back that gives you alot of hints and how to's. It would specially be good for a new cook, but anyone who has been cooking for years can also profit by it.

I bought this for my sister-in-law after I had recieved it from a friend. I love this cookbook! There are appetizing pictures of every recipe, and directions on how to do things like pipe meringue in the back of the book. I've cooked about ten different things from this book and everything has been delicious. I highly recommend it!

Even though I use the internet a lot for recipes these days, this book is a treasure of ideas for dinner parties or everyday meals which are easy but interesting and delicious. I am amazed at how many dishes I have made that have turned out really wonderful. It is a great book for browsing and the photos are very enticing and directions easy. I keep it on my kitchen island for inspiration!

So as a gift I went on line to Amazom.com and bought her her own copy. Wow was I ever glad I did. This is now her favorite cooking book. She really rants and raves about how great this book is. I know if I would ack her she would recomend this book to anyone who likes cooking. It's full of helpfull hints, receipts, conversion tables and etc. This book would make a good text book for cooks. This fantastic cookbook was originally produced in 2008, and just republished in 2016, it is, quite simply, THE must-have cookbook of this, or any other, year. The beautifully designed book offers DK’s trademark ultra clean and very beautiful design with their clear, unpretentious, and informative text, alongside its lavish and beautiful photography — for every single recipe in the book. The pictorial Table of Contents shows every recipe’s photo, title, time of preparation, and a single, concise line which describes exactly what you’d want to know about each recipe. The Illustrated Kitchen Bible take a global approach to compiling best-ever recipes from around the globe. Yet, they don’t come across as particularly exotic, since they’re mostly household-type recipes, which people would make every day, in today’s modern world. Fresh, inviting, healthy, delicious, quick and easy are some of the themes which run throughout. I will note that some recipes seem less like family recipes and more like your local, multigenerational-family-run restaurant’s most popular dish — if you happen to live in one of the great culinary capitals of the world. They’re fantastic. The chapters and subchapters are extensive in themselves. For example, the Starters and Light Bites chapter includes these high-lighted sections: Seafood Starters, Snacks on Toast, Weekend Brunch, Healthy Snacks, Party Bites, Lunch Box Ideas, Hearty Soups, and Meat-free Starters. That last vegetarian appetizer section offers many recipes from around the globe, including: Baba Ganoush, Tapenade, Zucchini Sticks, Grilled Mushrooms with Goat Cheese, Stuffed Grape Leaves, Borscht, White Bean Soup, Waldorf Salad, Roasted Tomato Salad with Lemon and Creme Fraiche, Spinach and Mushroom Crepes, Egg Fu Yung, Cheese Souffle, Feta Filo Pie, Warm Halloumi with Herbs, Tandoori Paneer Kebabs, and Authentic Swiss Fondue. Within the book itself, there are many, many more similar recipes not listed in the Table of Contents’ highlights.
