First, I will address something I saw mentioned in several reviews. My can arrived with a cap and seal but the can was slightly dented. It was apparently dented enough to damage the freshness seal because I didn't hear any "Sssss" from pressure releasing (as illustrated on the pop-top). I like that it comes with the re-closing top and the pop-top but... I'm pretty sure the broken seal hurt the freshness & flavor.
In my opinion (and I'm no expert), this is very similar to Bustelo in grind and flavor. It's so much more expensive that I probably won't get any more if I have Bustelo around. Or even if I have anything else cheaper and espresso ground.
There is something about the bitter notes of this that is just a little bit different from Bustelo but I can't put my finger on it. I do think that Bustelo with unsweetened cream goes down better than this does when served the same way.
I also notice that, as the Illy sits for a bit, it tastes even more like Bustelo. Some of that very slightly harsher flavor calms down as the coffee cools.
The bottom line is that I do like this well enough but it's no better than the much cheaper and more widely available Bustelo. As I mentioned, the top on this didn't give the pressure-release hiss I expected so I might ask about that in case I ever do buy this again. Maybe that threw the freshness off enough to give me this impression?

And guess what? Amazon will not let me return this (defective) can, presumably because I've hit some sort of limit. I don't know why Amazon is removing the lids but anyone buying this coffee is a coffee-lover and they're not going to be happy with a can of coffee arriving in this condition. Thank you - I feel better.

These Ship Without The Lid In The Picture

Ordered this Illy coffee and received a can with no lid. Hmmm... that's weird but accidents happen. I went to replace it, and Amazon - usually awesome, said sure we'll send a replacement. Great. Just got that and guess what? No lid. See the picture and compare to the picture of what they're selling. There is supposed to be a lid. Now, I'm not a fussy person but is a lid important to coffee? Yes, yes it is. This is a $12 can of coffee and it needs a lid - which is why Illy makes it with a lid. Walmart Great Value coffee that is 1/3 the price of this product comes with a lid.By Stephen on May 13, 2021
