80's Chestnut Not to Be Missed

Released in 1987, the Greg Allman Band's I'm No Angel is in many ways a typical example of adult-contemporary pop-rock as it stood in the period. Yet, despite this and the fact that it suffers from the now-dated production style of the 80s, it's a mature and satisfying record on many levels. In fact, it may well be that "I'm No Angel" is lifted above that production to the status of being far better than average because it is, after all, Gregg Allman and his extremely talented namesake band of the time.
Another thing that makes it worth a listen is the variety in style, which is quite diverse without ever sounding like Allman and company are reaching into territory that is outside their realm. The album starts with it's best-known song, the title track, which is reminiscent of John Mellencamp. They then move into an 80s-style R&B/rock'n'roll fusion with "Anything Goes," complete with horn section. After that, we have "Evidence of Love", a typical slow pop tune of the era that will recall the likes of Greg Khin. Lots of soul tunes, too, by way of "Yours for the Asking", "Things That Might Have Been", "Faces Without Names" and "Lead Me On." My personal favorite is "Can't Keep Running", an arena pop-rocker Eddie Money might wish he had written, but with a lot more depth and maturity. And of course there are tracks that recall the Allman Brothers Band with the slick jazz and blues fusion instrumental "Don't Want You No More" and the blusey closing track "Not My Cross to Bear."
One thing that really stands out with the Allman-penned tracks is the lyrics. "Faces Without Names" is a perfect example of masterfully-written words that show some deep reflection that is also easy for most of us to relate to.
All said, I'm No Angel may not appeal to all fans of the Allman camp, but it is an excellent, well-conceived work that should not be overlooked, and a testament to the versatility and talent of a rock music legend.

A survivor's lost angel

He's no angel, just ask him! But he sings like some kind of lost angel with the blues, someone who has faced it all -- good, bad, indifferent -- and come out on the other side all the better for the experience. No, it's not up to the impossibly high standard set by Laid Back all those many years ago; but it's a survivor's record, and it's much more (and much better) than any of us had a right to expect upon its original release back in 1987. Amazingly, almost 30 years on, it still has the emotional power to move you. I'd say it has held up incredibly well.

I loved his new CD. It has been out for a while now, but the music on this CD is very different then his usual. All the tracks on the CD are great! I have lost somehow two CDs but will be purchasing another ASAP

Had this years ago and it was stolen along with other discs. I love The Allman Bros. Band and have most of their cd's. Gregg Allman is one of the best keyboard players of all time and has a distinctive vocal range as well. I'm No Angel is rock solid and includes an excellent version of Don't Want You No More/Ain't My Cross To Bear.
