A chance to rewrite their ending is worth the risk in this swoony romantic comedy from Kosoko Jackson.

It’s been months since aspiring journalist Kian Andrews has heard from his ex-boyfriend, Hudson Rivers, but an urgent text has them meeting at a café. Maybe Hudson wants to profusely apologize for the breakup. Or confess his undying love. . . But no, Hudson has a favor to ask—he wants Kian to pretend to be his boyfriend while his parents are in town, and Kian reluctantly agrees.

The dinner doesn’t go exactly as planned, and suddenly Kian is Hudson’s plus one to Georgia’s wedding of the season. Hudson comes from a wealthy family where reputation is everything, and he really can’t afford another mistake. If Kian goes, he’ll help Hudson preserve appearances and get the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in media. This could be the big career break Kian needs.

But their fake relationship is starting to feel like it might be more than a means to an end, and it’s time for both men to fact-check their feelings.

Not Over You
I’m So Not Over YouKosoko JacksonM/M RomanceI just finished reading the paperback version of this book. So it took me longer to finish because I have been reading e-books. But this book for me is a solid 5/5! I was thoroughly pleased about the two main characters. Both of them made sense and so did the plot. Kian gets a message from his ex boyfriend, Hudson to meet him at a cafe. Kian is not over Hudson and he knows he should not meet him, but he does. Hudson wants Kian to pretend to be his boyfriend in front his parents for a dinner. Kian agrees when Hudson agrees to introduce him to a prospective boss. Well the dinner does not go well but Hudson’s parents invite him to a wedding in Atlanta. So the charade must continue. Of course the two men get closer and and the act stops becoming so much an act. But there are still issues that need to be addressed by both men, but more on Hudson’s part. Will the two men try for happiness st the end? I recommend reading the book.

Book has a great flow in character roll-out, descriptions, and plot. Enjoyed the description of the beer industry and the affluence of a black family-The Rivers. Recommend a sequel that describes the next phase of the couple’s life journeys.

Review: I absolutely adored this book! It was such a good read and I loved the romance in the book. I also loved how real the book was and how much I related to it. The book discussed student loans and class privilege in the book, which I really enjoyed because I don’t see that talked a lot about in other adult reads. The book did well with character development and world building. The book also did well with the smut and, even when the characters weren’t together, the author did well to do mentions and stuff to keep those reading strictly for the romance interested in the plot. The book also did a lot of pop culture references that Millennials will recognize.

However, the book is very fast paced in the beginning and it made it hard to get into the book and figure out what was going on. The book also had a small HP reference, but because of my review policy I had to knock it down a star. It is still upsetting to some in the queer community to see anything related to HP or JK Rowling mentioned in books, which makes it very hard on those in the community to see HP referenced in queer books.

Verdict: I absolutely loved this one! Highly recommend!

It's painful to criticize a writer, especially when he has demonstrable talent, but this book was a bit of a mess. The plotting is weirdly erratic and arbitrary. One example: Hudson has, after an argument, told Kian that he needn't go to dinner with Hudson's family. Kian shows up anyway, fifteen minutes late, and no explanation is given for what Hudson had told his parents before Kian's arrival. Next, Kian offends Hudson's father to the point where the man doesn't speak to Kian for the rest of the evening. This in spite of the fact that Kian is only at the dinner because Hudson maintains his parents like Kian. It becomes more confused and unbelievable from there. There's an argument in a clothing store, and an argument in a cafe, and an argument in an Uber. Maybe more than one in an Uber, I can't recall. Whatever drew these two men together. Kian comes across as a real piece of work, and... well, I'll leave it there.

This was a really refreshing love story of two young, professional, black men. It felt appropriately realistic while also entertaining.

Kian hasn't seen or heard from Hudson in quite some time. Good riddance. After all, their breakup was terrible, messy, and traumatic. Wait a minute. Why is Hudson texting him to meet up at a cafe? Kian has to find out, whatever the outcome, but he never expected Hudson to want something so unusual at their meetup. Hudson, outrageous man that he is, wants a favor, and not just any favor, he wants Kian to be his fake boyfriend at a family dinner with his parents. Didn't he get out of this when they broke up? Regardless, dinner takes an unexpected turn, and suddenly the faux pair are soon to be showcased at the biggest wedding of the year in Georgia. It's a great opportunity for Kian to launch his media career to sparkling new heights, and for Hudson to keep his family happy. Yet before the extravaganza is all wrapped up, Kian will need to unwrap his heart and figure out where it really belongs. Heartbreak isn't a life sentence, right?

I mostly enjoyed this comedic romance romp through Georgia with Kian and Hudson. Most of the story plays out from Kian's perspective, and he's bitter about their breakup. Many people have felt angry over such things, but I really would have liked to see more of their past relationship, both the good times, as well as what finally pulled them apart and made Kian so bitter. That bitterness spills over into interactions with Hudson and his family, but without more of the backstory, some of it comes across as mean. Fake dating with an ex is a setup that can work, but there has to be a path from the split to reconciliation, and I think only the latter half of that path was illustrated here.

What I did like is how funny the characters are, especially in the back half of the story. Plenty of popular culture references, jokes, and amusing situations abound, and I enjoyed laughing in those moments. Societal and topical issues feature, and even the side characters help bolster the amusement. I'm So (Not) Over You is the story of what happens after the breakup, that leads to a fake date, that then pulls two hearts back toward each other once more. Recommended for readers who appreciate second chance romance, fake dating, and funny stories that finish strong.
